About this listen
Discover how Fort Worth Amon Carter was The Ultimate Texan. He was a catalyst for growth and influence from Fort Worth to the edge of West Texas, and he was called Mr. West Texas for his incredible influence.
He loved Fort Worth so intensely that, when attending a meeting in Dallas, he brought his own lunch in a sack and a can of Coca-Cola so he would not spend a dime in Dallas!
But there’s more about this legend:
· Built, owned, and operated the first TV station in Texas, which is now KXAS/NBC5
· Built, owned, and operated the Fort Worth Star-Telegram and WBAP Radio
· Used his influence to have the loop around Fort Worth named Loop 820 as a subtle way to promote WBAP
· Was a driving force behind the creation of Texas Tech University in Lubbock
· Was so influential that a dozen different buildings were named in his honor:
o Amon Carter Stadium at TCU
o Amon Carter Museum of American Art
o Amon Carter Plaza at Texas Tech
o Carter Blood Care
o Carter Peak at Big Bend Park
o Amon Carter Riverside High School in Fort Worth
