La gran multitud que seguía a Jesucristo no había comido durante tres días, y tenía mucho hambre. Está escrito que Jesús, al verlos, tuvo compasión y dijo: «No quiero dejar que se vayan hambrientos, no sea que se desmayen por el camino». Entonces bendijo los panes y los peces y se los pasó a la multitud; todos se llenaron y aún así quedaron 7 cestas de sobras. Jesús alimentó a más de 4000 hombres, más las mujeres y los niños.
