In 1914 won Max von Laue de Nobelprijs voor zijn ontdekking van de diffractie van röntgenstraling door kristallen, waarmee hij twee natuurkundige puzzels in een klap oploste. Daarnaast gold de trotse Duitser als bewijs dat je het nazi regime kon doorleven zonder mee te werken.
