ロバート・ヘンダーソン医師は、ダラスのベテラン脊椎外科医。ある日、地元の病院から、ただならぬ様子で電話がかかってくる。新しい外科医が手術に失敗し、自分の足で歩いて病院に来た入院患者が、つま先を動かすことさえできなくなってしまったという。ヘンダーソン医師のこれまでの長いキャリアの中でも、そんな話は聞いたことがない。手術はあまりにもお粗末で、ヘンダーソン医師は疑い始める。もしかしたらこの人物は医師になりすました詐欺師ではないだろうか、と。
