El capítulo 6 de Juan habla del pan de vida en su integridad. En el pasaje de las Escrituras de hoy se dice que cuando Jesús cruzó al otro lado del río Tiberias, una gran multitud le siguió. La razón por la que tanta gente siguió a Jesús es que había visto los milagros que hizo en los enfermos. Cuando Jesús subió a la montaña y se sentó con Sus discípulos, vio que la multitud se le acercaba y le dijo a Felipe: «¿De dónde compraremos pan para que coman éstos?». Entonces Felipe dijo: «Doscientos denarios de pan no bastarían para que cada uno de ellos tomase un poco».
