Il suo nome è poco conosciuto ma è l’avvocato che si oppose a Microsoft nel celebre caso antitrust che segnò la storia del colosso tech. L’accusa? Aver abusato della propria posizione di monopolio nei primi anni 2000, obbligando i produttori di PC ad installare Internet Explorer per poter utilizzare il sistema operativo Windows, a scapito di browser concorrenti come Netscape e Java. La deposizione di Bill Gates di fronte a Boies si rivelò un disastro per Microsoft: i video mostrano un Gates nervoso, irritato, a tratti grottesco. Alla fine Microsoft perse la causa e fu costretta a rivedere alcune delle sue pratiche commerciali.
