Chesnutt, and Paul Laurence Dunbar, it is only now that Hopkins is beginning to receive the critical recognition she deserves. Her most significant work, Contending Forces A Romance Illustrative of Negro Life North and South, published in 1900, remains a cornerstone of her legacy.
