About this listen

Step into the enchanting world of Liliecronas Home, a poignant tale set in the picturesque district of Värmland, Sweden. Originally published in 1911, this captivating story was translated into English by Anna Harwell and released in London in 1913. At the heart of this narrative lies the Lövdala Parsonage, nestled at the bottom of the now-dried Svartsjö Lake. Here, we meet the kind-hearted Pastor Lyselius and his beautiful daughter, whose lives take a dark turn with the arrival of a wicked new wife. This stepmother, skilled in the art of deception, lures with her cooking but soon reveals her cruel nature, tormenting her servants and especially the delicate mamsell Maia Lisa. As Maia Lisa bears the weight of her suffering, she finds steadfast support in the clear-eyed Little Maid, who never hesitates to speak out for justice. With the stepmothers oppressive rule transforming even the gentle pastor into a puppet, times grow increasingly dire. Yet, hope glimmers on the horizon as change looms.
