牡鹿鍾乳洞は、日本でもめずらしい縦穴型の鍾乳洞です。牡鹿鍾乳洞はとちゅうで二手にわかれており、ひとつの分かれ道の一番奥に牡鹿湧泉（おじかゆうせん）があります。ここからは、コンコンと水が湧きだし、そこから小川が洞内を流れていっています。牡鹿鍾乳洞は、ほとんどが川は流れていません。この牡鹿湧泉ふきんの区画にのみ小川が流れています。
