道南・函館のお正月の味として親しまれてきた「くじら汁」。今回は、家庭ごとに味の違いがあるこの郷土料理を、通年で提供している数少ないお店を訪ね、初めての「くじら汁」体験をレポートします。
お邪魔したのは、歴史的建造物が並ぶ港が丘通沿いに佇む函館さくら家。1921年（大正10年）に建てられ、函館市の伝統的建造物にも指定されている建物は、ノスタルジックなロマンあふれる“函館らしい”風景そのものです。手作りあんの甘味とともに味わえる道南のお正月に欠かせないくじら汁。軽井沢出身の店主・赤塚泉さんが、この土地で出会い、大切に伝えてきた「くじら汁」の美味しさと、その背景にある想いに迫ります。
