ＲＫＫラジオでは、８月１５日に世代を超えて
『 戦争 』や『 平和 』について考えようと、
戦時中の熊本が舞台となった絵本『 ごめんね メリー 』の朗読をお届けしました。
この作品は熊本市動植物園の前身・水前寺動物園で実際に起こった出来事を題材に、
１９８８年に熊本市の主婦たちによって作られた絵本です。
太平洋戦争末期、日本本土への空襲がはじまると、
軍は脱走への対策・エサ不足などを理由に全国の動物園へ
「 猛獣を処分せよ 」 と命令します。
誰もが飢えていた時代、動物にエサを与える余裕はありませんでした。
水前寺動物園も例外ではなく、悲しい決断を迫られる―――というものです。
（ 上野動物園の「 かわいそうなぞう 」の熊本版ともいえます ）
『 戦争 』とは 何か。 『 平和 』とは 何か。
