जरासंध महाभारत कालीन मगध राज्य के नरेश थे । सम्राट जरासंध ने बहुत से राजाओं को अपने कारागार में बंदी बनाकर रखा था पर उसने किसी को भी मारा नहीं था। इसका कारण यह था कि वह चक्रवर्ती सम्राट बनने की लालसा हेतु ही वह इन राजाओं को बंदी बनाकर रख रहा था ताकि जिस दिन 101 राजा हों और वे महादेव को प्रसन्न करने के लिए उनकी बलि दे सके।
वह मथुरा के नरेश कंस का ससुर एवं परम मित्र था उसकी दोनो पुत्रियो अस्ति और प्राप्ति का विवाह कंस से हुआ था। श्रीकृष्ण से कंस के वध का प्रतिशोध लेने के लिए उन्होंने १७ बार मथुरा पर चढ़ाई की लेकिन जिसके कारण भगवान श्रीकृष्ण को मथुरा छोड़ कर जाना पड़ा फिर वो द्वारिका जा बसे, तभी उनका नाम रणछोड़ कहलाया।
