Ο Θεός, όταν δημιούργησε τον ουρανό και τη γη στην αρχή του χρόνου, δημιούργησε επίσης τους αιώνιους κόσμους, τον ουρανό και την κόλαση. Δημιούργησε επίσης τον άνθρωπο κατ’ εικόνα Του. Όμως, επειδή ο πρώτος άνθρωπος, ο Αδάμ, αμάρτησε ενώπιον του Θεού, όλοι οι άνθρωποι πρέπει να πεθάνουν μία φορά. «Καθώς είναι αποφασισμένον εις τους ανθρώπους άπαξ να αποθάνωσι, μετά δε τούτο είναι κρίσις» (Πρὸς Ἑβραίους 9:27).
