【解説】
福永武彦は、1918年（大正7年）生まれで、東大仏文科入学以降、フランス文学や欧米の先端的な文学に深く傾倒し、その知見を後に自らの小説に取り入れた。自然主義的な私 小説を排し、詩的で観念的な美しい文体が特色と言われる。
作品の傾向としては、30歳代半ばの1954年に作家デビュー作となった『草の花』を始めとして、人間の孤独や不安など人間心理の深奥を探り、実存的なテーマを深く追求するものが多い。これは、幼少期の母との死別、一高時代の少年との愛の挫折、社会人となってから繰り返し罹患した結核などの病苦やそれに起因する最初の妻との離婚など、作家として出発するまでの複雑な人生経験が反映されていると感じられる。
しかし他方で、純文学以外にミステリー（『海市』『告白』など）や幻想小説、さらには詩や評論、フランス文学などの翻訳（カミュ、ボードレールなど）、日本の古典の現代語訳（『今昔物語』『古事記』など）といったように、作品分野は多岐にわたった。
本オーディオブックに収録した各作品も、孤独や不安などの懊悩が基調となっている。
「秋の嘆き」・・・不可解な兄の自死への不信・・・時が流れ、妹の私が知ることとなった兄、母、家族の宿命とは。
「鏡の中の少女」・・・鏡に映るもう一人の自分に精神が翻弄されていく少女の奧悩。
「幻影」・・・死が身近だった戦時中に誓い合った愛。男と女、それぞれに抱いた幻影とは何だったのか。
「沼」・・・不仲の父と母。逃れるように危ない沼に誘われていく子どもの深層心理とは。
