Obwohl sich Kelten, Römer und Alemannen im heutigen Zürich niederließen, wuchs das Gebiet erst unter fränkischer Herrschaft im Mittelalter zu einer größeren Stadt heran. Vorher war Zürich ein Ort mit mehreren Zentren, bestehend aus Großmünster, Fraumünster, Peterskirche und der Pfalz. Das Privileg der Reichsunmittelbarkeit sicherte 1262 die Herrschaft des deutschen Königs. Dank Münz-, Zoll- und Marktrecht entwickelte sich Zürich im 11. und 12. Jahrhundert zu einem überregionalen Handelszentrum. 1351 trat Zürich der Eidgenossenschaft bei, ein Schachzug, der die Stadt vor der Expansionswut der Habsburger schützte.
