Publisher's Summary

John Puller is a former war hero and now the best military investigator in the U.S. Army’s Criminal Investigative Division. He is a loner with few possessions by preference, but he has an indomitable spirit and an unstoppable determination for finding the truth. His father was the most decorated U.S. Marine in history, but now resides in a nursing home far from his battlefield glory. Puller’s older brother, also a military vet, is serving a life sentence in Leavenworth Penitentiary. Puller is called out to a remote, rural area far from any military outpost to investigate into the brutal murder of a family in their home. The dead husband was in the army and the wife worked for a Pentagon contractor. The local homicide detective, a woman with personal demons of her own, clashes with Puller over the investigation. What neither of them knows is what is waiting for them across the street from the murdered family’s home. It is something that will turn an already complicated case on its head. As Puller digs through deception after red herring, he realizes that absolutely nothing, and nobody, he’s so far seen in this small town, are what they seem. He is truly one man against an overwhelming force.

Too much Ra, Ra, For God and Country

I've enjoyed previous Baldacci books but found his new hero so far over the top I won't be seeking out further John Puller titles. I'm sure the author will find a huge readership though and good on him - you can't please everyone all the time😏

Some pros and cons -overall an entertaining listen

Where does Zero Day: John Puller, Book 1 rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

I'm still relative new to audiobooks but ranks above average. The publisher uses sound effects and sometimes soundtrack / music for mood which I don't think was essential and some may find distracting or annoying.

What did you like best about this story?

It was a little unbelievable in one or two places but if you can overlook that the story line is gripping with a couple of twists and turns.

Which character – as performed by Ron McLarty and Orlagh Cassidy – was your favourite?

This was the first time I had heard McLarty read and his gravelly voice suited the main character (Puller).

Any additional comments?

I've read many Lee Child (Jack Reacher) books and if you like those you should enjoy this book. There are a number of similarities.

Why two readers?

I don't know who thought it would be a good idea to have two readers for this book but please don't do it again! The reading was so disjointed that it was extremely unpleasant to listen to. Were the readers even in the same room?
The plot was so implausible that I nearly gave up. However, I persisted until the end which meant that I wasted a few hours of my life.
This has been the first and last David Baldacci book for me.

Excellent Plot .

Extremely Enjoyable, fast paced thriller. Baldacci is always worth reading. He keeps you guessing until the end.

Original. Patronising.

For his fans this is way too patronising with explanations and dwaddle. Therefore he lost momentum quite a number of times. Poor editing?
Story was ok.

Fantastic

Great story. Brilliantly narrated. Loved that a male spoke for male characters and a female spoke for female characters.

He said she said

Dramatic background music is a pain as well as the ,he said she said when it’s obvious when the male or female speak

Jack Reacher without the bad boy

It was an ok book - light entertainment. I won’t be listening to the 2nd book in the series.
