Relax and find happiness amid the swirl of the modern world with this internationally best-selling guide to simplifying your life by a Japanese monk who embodies the wisdom of Zen.
Drawing on centuries of wisdom, renowned Zen Buddhist priest Shunmyo Masuno applies the essence of Zen to modern life in clear, practical, easily adopted lessons - one a day for 100 days.
Discover how:
- Lining up your shoes after you take them off can bring order to your life
- Putting down your fork after every bite can help you feel more grateful for what you have
- Spending time barefoot can strengthen your body
- Planting a flower and watching it grow can teach you to embrace change
- Going outside to watch the sunset can make every day feel celebratory

With each task, you will open yourself up to a renewed sense of peace and inner calm.

There is much to like here,
There is much Zen in this book. In the stories it presents, the small lessons it tries to teach, and the the way it is written and read. It is not a 'How to Guide' on how to Zen, or achieve a Zen like state, but musings on how one might put some Zen practices into motion in todays modern world. If you come to this book looking, like I had done, for a 'beginners guide to Zen', the practice and philosophy, You will probably be disappointed, and find the book lacking or simplistic. But that I feel, upon reflection with this book, would be as being guided to a forest, then asking where the trees are. You have grasped the larger concepts of what you're looking at, but lost the view for the small details.
In his book Shunmyo Masuno is asking us to look, and be mindful of the small details. To think of the small things that we might not realise impact our daily lives. For what we do day to day, is our lives.
At times the book gave me a chuckle, at times I saw myself in the stories, and at times I disagreed with the words. But I feel that is more than acceptable, as putting things into practice and achieving the 'Art of Simple Living' might elude me for the time being. This I feel is a book I will return to more times, than just the two times I've listen to it fully. For some of the lesons it has to teach, I am not the right person to learn them yet.
I give 'the Art of Simple Living' 4 stars.

An enriching and soothing listen. Occasionally strange logic (perhaps some of the 100 points needed further elaboration, as each is brief), but this is a well of healthy and easily-understood wisdom.
