Publisher's Summary

This is a manual designed to get White Belts to competent Blue Belts in as fast a time as possible.

Zen Jiu Jitsu is more a rendition of concepts than techniques. This is the simplest and easiest way to break down and simplify the many and varied ideas, philosophies and combinations in the Brazilian Jiu Jitsu arsenal. For both competition jiu jitsu and self defense jiu jitsu most white belts need to fully understand the concepts, but it can be VERY confusing!

Here is a short list of a few of the questions students ask, that are covered in depth:

  • What is the guard and how do we utilize it best?
  • What options do we have from guard?
  • Why is posture and distance important?
  • The mount is a powerful position but how do I get there?
  • ... And when I do get there, how do I stay there?

This is a great manual for anyone just starting Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Traditional Jiu Jitsu, MMA and Grappling.

Worth it

I saw immediate improvement in my 'game' from this book. I felt it jumped around a little but there are many nuggets of information in there. I will purchase the paperback.

Quick Thoughts

The conceptual approach to learning was quite refreshing. I have applied some of the principles to help me to enjoy training a little more. The sections on the grappling aids and personal anecdotes about competition were particularly helpful.

If David lynch did audio books

If David Lynch narrated audio books, this is how it would sound. The poor pronunciation and everything just makes the book better to listen to if you imagine David Lynch doing it. You're welcome.

Good content for beginners in Jiujitsu. Worth a listen and relisten in parts.

Wow!!!

So I picked up this, the second book in the series, first.
About halfway through... I grabbed the first one as well!
I have been practicing martial arts for over 25 years & teaching for over 16 years. I recently started BJJ & I learned more from this book than six months in class!!!
If you want to improve your game...
GET. THIS. SERIES!!!

Loved!

I've been practicing for about a year and a half almost daily, currently a four stripe white belt. Absolutely great information, a lot of important concepts to think about, and a lot of further reading suggestions offered. Would recommend to anyone who is starting jiu jitsu through newly promoted blue belts.

Pretty helpful!

This book is not a how too but if your very new to jiu jitsu it gives you a good start on what you should be focusing on, and a good foundation of general concepts.

Great read Narrator a little annoying

The Info in this book is great. The
narrator sounds too dry and mispronounces a lot of BJJ terms and names like Rickson Gracie & De La Riva.

No shade thrown though. Great read!

Narration like nails on a chalkboard

Narration is painful to listen to. After hearing him pronounce Royce and Rickson with an "R" for the 15th time I had to tap out.

Most boring story teller

Book wasn’t bad at all. Enjoyed much of it but the commentator was horrible. Very bland and dull.

informative

this is a guide on how to be s better white belt. very good training methods and drilling along with mental ideas. If you have the ability to retain and successfully execute this information, in my opinion you will make it to blue belt in no time. More important than that you will be a better more well rounded player all together.

Great book for white belts

As a white belt in BJJ I found this book very helpful. More on the mental than for technically aid (but it still has many helpful technical examples and principles laid out). Highly recommended.

My 1st Book Review

Not much useful information. Waffling on about happy gilmore etc. The reader pronounced Royce Gracie's wrong and isnt very appealing. Sorry for the negativity but i have never felt the need to leave a review but dont waste your credit.

May work better as a book rather than an audiobook

Not bad, but not great. As I said, this may work better as a book as opposed to an audiobook. The narrator clearly has little to no knowledge of BJJ, as he he mispronounced Rickson, Royce, and de la Riva on several occasions.

Awesome Concepts!

As a confused white belt this book has opened, (I feel it has), my mind to see BJJ and the tornado that is rolling is a completely different light.

The principles and concepts passed down through the lovely, fluid wording of this book is defiantly worth a listen for any guys and girls new to mats! Defiantly enjoyed this one!

Have a good one,
Ben
