Story
Are you stuck? Struggle. That's the word that comes to mind when I think about the transition from blue belt to purple belt. For reasons that I can't quite work out, when I came to the later stages of being a blue belt I felt confused and lost in my game. Trying to put all the pieces together seemed like a task too far and quitting looked like an option, after all, most guys my age are hitting the golf course or surfing not rolling on the floor with sweat soaked people.

This is a collection of intimate and sometimes shocking conversations about motivation with 12 Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belts. The end result is 12 fascinating and unexpected stories about overcoming adversity and achieving success in life and Jiu-Jitsu. Jiu-Jitsu has often been used as a metaphor of life, but you can replace Jiu-Jitsu with any sport, business or ambitious pursuit - the lessons are universal. What drives ambitious people is often shaped by our subconscious mind. We are not always aware of the influences driving our behavior, but you will discover underlying themes.

In Success, not only did I seek to discover what motivates high achievers, but I also dug for the philosophies that lead to success. During these interviews, I asked uncomfortable questions that led to answers that often surprised even the athletes being interviewed, because it is the subconscious mind that drives most ambitious people to achieve.

There are times when life feels like it has you cornered: financial difficulties, relationship issues, work problems, all of the above. Every one of us, at one time or another, will have to face up to the challenges that come our way. And there are two ways of meeting them: negatively, where blame is the answer, where other people are at fault, where you haven’t been treated fairly. Or positively, where you own the situation, learn and grow from it and become a better person at the end of it.

Sword techniques and insight that grows on you
- By Thomas on 12-10-2019
Publisher's Summary
This is a manual designed to get White Belts to competent Blue Belts in as fast a time as possible.
Zen Jiu Jitsu is more a rendition of concepts than techniques. This is the simplest and easiest way to break down and simplify the many and varied ideas, philosophies and combinations in the Brazilian Jiu Jitsu arsenal. For both competition jiu jitsu and self defense jiu jitsu most white belts need to fully understand the concepts, but it can be VERY confusing!
Here is a short list of a few of the questions students ask, that are covered in depth:
- What is the guard and how do we utilize it best?
- What options do we have from guard?
- Why is posture and distance important?
- The mount is a powerful position but how do I get there?
- ... And when I do get there, how do I stay there?
This is a great manual for anyone just starting Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Traditional Jiu Jitsu, MMA and Grappling.

If David Lynch narrated audio books, this is how it would sound. The poor pronunciation and everything just makes the book better to listen to if you imagine David Lynch doing it. You're welcome.

The Info in this book is great. The
narrator sounds too dry and mispronounces a lot of BJJ terms and names like Rickson Gracie & De La Riva.

Unlistenable
I’ve made several attempts at enjoying this book but I find the narrator’s voice to be whinny and grating. That, coupled with his obvious lack of understanding of the subject matter make this audio book unlistenable. His pacing is jarring and he mispronounces the names of the very founders of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. His misplaced emphasis on words belies his understanding of basic BJJ terminology: he says “gi” as if someone instructed him on its pronunciation only moment prior to recording. The book’s contents seem childish, it’s almost as if it’s a primer on how to motivate yourself just to get out of bed or off the couch. This might be a good book for a petulant youth, unable to wipe themselves, but any adult with a modicum of initiative should save their money. I sure wish I had.

Solid information but the narration was not good.
Loads of great info in here to help on the journey to blue but the narrator clearly has no experience of jiu jitsu or grappling. Pronouncing the R’s in Rickson and De la Riva, then taking about UFC fighter ‘Kyle Sunnen’. The lack of experience made the information relayed seem disjointed but, if you can get past that, it was good.

May work better as a book rather than an audiobook
Not bad, but not great. As I said, this may work better as a book as opposed to an audiobook. The narrator clearly has little to no knowledge of BJJ, as he he mispronounced Rickson, Royce, and de la Riva on several occasions.

As a confused white belt this book has opened, (I feel it has), my mind to see BJJ and the tornado that is rolling is a completely different light.
The principles and concepts passed down through the lovely, fluid wording of this book is defiantly worth a listen for any guys and girls new to mats! Defiantly enjoyed this one!
