Le livre de Zacharie se trouve presque à la fin de l'Ancien Testament, parmi les "petits prophètes". Avec Aggée et Malachie, il est l'un des trois prophètes postexiliques : il s'adresse aux Juifs revenus dans la région de Jérusalem, après l'exil, pour reconstruire le temple et la nation. Comme Aggée, il encourage le peuple à terminer le temple, mais son message va bien au-delà de ces murs physiques et des problèmes contemporains : recourant au symbolisme apocalyptique, il parle du Messie que Dieu enverra pour délivrer son peuple et pour régner sur toute la terre.
