beyond expectations
I am so happy to have experienced this book through the voice of Isobelle herself.
I have been in love with this series ever since I went into my school library when I was in year 8 (14 years old)and decided to pick out a book randomly abd read it, and that book was Obernewtyn. I was immediately enthralled. now as a 27 year old i too have to say goodbye to these characters who for years I felt were my friends. it was so special that I ended this tale with Isobelle. Thank you Isobelle!!

Interesting
I loved this series and devoured it, but this last book was perhaps the least enjoyed overall and that was primarily due to the disjointed pacing and plot lines.
Character arcs and plot points - which we had been building up to over multiple books - were left to fizzle out. I generally enjoyed Elspeth’s inner monologue over the series but in this book a lot of it felt like page filler. In fact it was a detriment to the story because Elspeth kept reminding us of all the questions that needed answering… only to never be answered, or in some cases, were simply forgotten entirely.
The build up to Ariel and the Destroyer was dramatic and greatly anticipated but was over too quickly and in a very anti-climactic manner.
As others have mentioned, the ending was a disappointment, though not because it is an open ending. Rather, I felt as though the epilogue ought to have been the final standard chapter and that an epilogue was required following that chapter. The final tease was less a tease and more a riddle that left me trying to work out how it made any sense at all.
I love Isobelle Carmody, the series, and her performance in narrating such an array of characters and emotions. I want to love this book but it was clearly and unfortunately rushed. It is not bad though and is still an interesting journey to take part in. If you enjoy the series, it is still very worthwhile if only to get a small piece of closure. I would liken it to the experience of watching the final season of Game of Thrones…

concluded at last
Good series and at last concluded. A job well done but some story arcs like the freeing the beasts were just glossed over and others like being trapped in and then escaping the Quadrants had too much content. A bit anti-climatic and not enough time on the characters we love - why introduce so many new characters at such a late stage? Elspeth has not really gotten smarter in all these books, has she? Anyway, some things left me scratching my head but overall okay.
