Publisher's Summary

Late on a hot summer night in the tail end of 1965, Charlie Bucktin, a precocious and bookish boy of 13, is startled by an urgent knock on the window of his sleep-out. His visitor is Jasper Jones, an outcast in the regional mining town of Corrigan. Rebellious, mixed-race, and solitary, Jasper is a distant figure of danger and intrigue for Charlie. So when Jasper begs for his help, Charlie eagerly steals into the night by his side, terribly afraid but desperate to impress. Jasper takes him through town and to his secret glade in the bush, and it's here that Charlie bears witness to Jasper's horrible discovery.

With his secret like a brick in his belly, Charlie is pushed and pulled by a town closing in on itself in fear and suspicion as he locks horns with his tempestuous mother; falls nervously in love, and battles to keep a lid on his zealous best friend, Jeffrey Lu.

And in vainly attempting to restore the parts that have been shaken loose, Charlie learns to discern the truth from the myth, and why white lies creep like a curse. In the simmering summer where everything changes, Charlie learns why the truth of things is so hard to know, and even harder to hold in his heart.

Coming of age

While the story takes you along on the extraordinary exploits of the 14 year old Charles, the author deals with issues such as racism, incest and divorce. I can see this novel being an excellent high school text.

The narrator was Amazing! !

The story was great and so many interesting topics to create conversation. The narrator of this does a 10/10 job. Best narration I've ever heard. He made the characters come to life! I highly recommend this book!

The best narration I have ever heard

What about Humphrey Bower’s performance did you like?

He made me believe I was listening to each of the varied, complex characters, from a gawky boy, an an old, isolated man, a woman restricted by the times, through to the Asian immigrant lovingly tending his garden. He captured the youth and coming of age of the main characters, so that I was swept back to being a teenager in a country town in the sixties. Brilliant!

Aussie Outback

You've gotta love a story that encaptures the lives of a small Aussie outback town. Classic storytelling at its best. 'Bloody ripper'!

A gripping story that subtly weaves and turns.

An excellent insight into a young life. Perhaps the thoughts belong on somewhat older shoulders, but the story line is credible and unpredictable. This is not just a book for young adults. Oldies will enjoy it too.

Loved it!

I loved this story. I was captivated from the beginning. The characters are realistic relatable and lovable. The story is funny, witty, tragic and warm. Humphrey Bower, as always, is amazing.

I don't understand how it has won awards.

I have to teach this to a Year 11 English class and I am dreading. Really struggled to get through it. For a story that is dedicated to a number of females in the author's life, he sure doesn't write about women in positive roles.

Brilliant

If you loved To Kill a Mockingbird, you're going to love this book. Now one of my favorite Australian novels.

Has it all!

A beautiful story - mystery combined with wonderful portrayal of country town life and characters to love and hate. Totally recommend!
