Publisher's Summary

Tim Booth is shocked when his first emergency callout for someone short of breath turns out to be an adult man with a blocked nose. Far from beginner's luck, this turns out to be an omen for the rest of his paramedic career.

Between the obligatory stories of objects lodged in body cavities and grown men who can't look after themselves when their wives are away, Tim finds that the promised life-saving moments are far outweighed by the trivial, frustrating and bizarre ambulance callouts. He and his colleagues battle fatigue, abuse and burnout - treated with coffee, occasional moments of heroism, and a healthy dose of dark humour.

Told with cutting wit, pathos and disarming insight, You Called an Ambulance for What? is a comedic behind-the-sirens look at the challenges, absurdities and shocking reality of life as an Australian intensive care paramedic.

Entertaining and eye opening

I loved this book from start to finish. It was very funny at times and also sad. The way our paramedics are treated at times is appallingly. It was eye opening to hear this.

Shots fired at South West Sydney

Some great anecdotes and a solid insight into the vital and complex work that paramedics do. Without them we would crumble.

However, right from the opening the author characterises nearly all patients from SW Sydney as welfare cheats and morons, which is both offensive and reductive. I was hoping it was satire but as the book progressed I realised that it was just reliant on lazy stereotypes. The frequent references to people misusing their pension cards was particularly nasty.

Australian paramedic reality

As an Australian doctor it’s the best reflection of what life is really like for paramedics. Outstanding! I spent some time on the road with inner city Perth Ambos and it was an education for me. So much laughter and absolute respect. Great book.

Very interesting read.

I enjoyed this book. I’m an Australian so i appreciate the hard work and risks involved throughout the pandemic. And to hear about some of the reasons people call 000 are mind blowing!

Brilliant! Hilarious yet compassionate

I'm only half way through but felt the need to drop my 5 stars early. I'm loving this read! The author reads in a deadpan yet hilarious tone and tells tales of ludicrous ambo call outs from the laughable to the critical. An enlightening read that's given me even more respect for our paramedics. A must read!

The honest and transparent

it was refreshing to hear about the direct, real and honest view of someone in one of our countries most important, yet unappreciated rules. it's given me a new found respect for all ambulance officers
