Editorial Reviews

Meet Marcus Valerius Aquila, brave centurion and condemned hero, in Book One Wounds of Honour, written by Anthony Riches and read by professional narrator Saul Reichlin. Marcus is in hiding from the Imperial Army who executed his father. He takes on an alias and lives in secret among the outcasts of Hadrian’s Wall. Then fate catches up with him and he must soon come out of the shadows to lead an entire army into war against the rebels. His path is wrought with danger but he fights for victory, justice and honour. Available now from Audible.

Publisher's Summary

Thrilling, authentic, and action packed, this novel introduces soldier hero Marcus Valerius: a centurion stationed on Hadrian's Wall in the second century during a revolt against the Roman Empire.

Marcus Valerius Aquila has scarcely landed in Britannia when he has to run for his life - condemned to dishonorable death by power-crazed emperor Commodus. The plan is to take a new name, serve in an obscure regiment on Hadrian's Wall, and lie low until he can hope for justice. Then a rebel army sweeps down from the wastes north of the wall, and Marcus has to prove he's hard enough to lead a century in the front line of a brutal, violent war.

Great start, I know I'll love the series already

The author must be a masrer. Well written, descriptive and captivating. It's pure dramatic fiction licence no doubt but still must have been thoroughly researched. Along with one of my favourite narrators who helps to bring the story alive in his usual way I heartily recommend the series ...on to book 2 for me and I know I'll love it !

A story spoken with great enthusiasm...

Everything a gripping war story should be.
But the main protagonist (Marcus) sounds a tad effeminate. Very engrossing story telling.

Average story, I would continue the series if I need a book to read or if I can purchase them on sale. As for.now, I'm moving on

Average story

+ Likeable characters with some character growth
+ Great job at distinguishing the different cultures and how it pertains to characters especially auxillia life vs. legion

- Duel welding.. Srsly? Fuck off...
- Children - teenagers becoming / being made a centerion over night is jarring and very weak plot point that is tired and over used. (which normally took 10-15 years to achieve in the Imperial peeriod) over

I would suggest this book if it was I sale but I suggest Ben Kane or Goldsworthy first

Great story but ...

Here's the thing. I love books about the Roman empire and this is a pretty good one. I just wish I had read it in book form. The narrator sounds like an older man and the hero is only 19 years old. The voice of the main character was just wrong to my ear and it ruined the story for me. If, like me the narrator is important to you I suggest listening to the sample clip before you spend your credit.

NOT BAD FOR SOMETHING I STUMBLED UPON

If he had Pebbles narrate this I think we would have a real winning series. Plenty of fast passed action with a good storyline. Worth a listen.

Too warm in it's treatment of all things military

Not terrible, but the everybody in the story is too ready with a just right pithy quip, or a wise statement summing things up. I feel like it was written for and by a fan of the 19th century British empire. I believe in the pax Britannica as much as the next guy, but the dude lays it on way freaking thick.

I enjoyed it. I'll read the next one.

Fans of Roman Legions in Britannia will like this story. Nicely detailed descriptions of battles and the carnage they inflict. It's a well researched and written book. I was warned about the voice of Marcus...eh...top notch voice work though.

Formulaic.

Formulaic. Lacking in legionary life details. Lacking in Roman cultural details. Personalities all standard tropes. Superboy wronged, Tonto sidekick, overcomes resistance of the old guard to become the most popular boy on the beach. Must avenge wrongs by the baddies, who are equally stereotypical. Considered asking for a return.

The reader is skilled, but almost cartoonish in his voices. I felt like I was reading a Hardy boys book and was 12 again.

There is far better Roman Military genre available. I bought this based on a reader review. I will not continue the series.

Good story

Where does Wounds of Honour rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

Not the best but I have listened to a lot worse. Nice to be in the roman legions era, made a good change from the detective stories I often listen toot

What was one of the most memorable moments of Wounds of Honour?

The battle scenes one was there in the midst of the blood and glory, per haps not for the very screemish

Have you listened to any of Saul Reichlin’s other performances? How does this one compare?

don't know as the first book I have listened too

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

neither
