About this listen

"Not to worry, I'll compensate you for your time and your… skill."

My boss is a walking red flag. He's bolshy and rude. Impossible to please. A big, broody man with dark eyes that carry an unmistakable message—"I am not manageable."

Seriously, he's the worst.

If it's not bad enough that he's a nightmare in the office, he's all but ordering me to be his date to his son's wedding. He says it's called "winning a divorce." I try telling him that's not a real thing but it falls on deaf ears.

Not only that, he appears to be in the throes of a major personal awakening and is determined that I'm the man to guide him through it. Normally, I'm all for going above and beyond in the name of being a star performer at work, but the services he requires are becoming increasingly indecent.

See what I mean? Red flags galore. So many red flags I can't count them all. I might as well be playing a game of red flag bingo at this point.

Just my luck, when it comes to Derek MacAvoy… I see a red flag and instantly want to date it.

Work: Strictly Professional can be enjoyed as a standalone, but is best enjoyed after Rent: Paid in Full.

Really struggled with this, didn’t love the story and hated the narrator for Derek. It’s a shame because I have previously enjoyed audiobooks by this author

24 yo Wyn Foster has always wanted to be a PA and he prides himself in knowing he does a good job. That is until he is thrust into the position of Derek MacAvoy’s PA. In his fifties, Derek is pure evil: demanding, impatient, scary and sexy as hell, and he enjoys making Wyn jump through his hoops. When the wedding plans for Derek’s son, Miller, fall through at the last moment, Derek knows it will break Wyn to plan and coordinate the whole thing in three weeks. Worse, Derek’s ex-wife is bringing her yoga instructor / lover and Derek demands that Wyn pretend to be his boyfriend and attend as his plus-one to “win the divorce”. It’s a stressful time for Wyn and when Derek proposes he pay Wyn to teach him about gay sex, Wyn is so bamboozled he agrees before his commonsense can kick in. It’s a wild time for Wyn but he starts to see his satanic boss in a very new light!

This was a fun fake-relationship / workplace / bisexual awakening / age-gap romance. I really enjoyed sitting in Wyn’s snarky head as he slowly worked out how to manage the impossible Derek. Derek was a more sympathetic character than I thought he would be: he’d closeted himself in his teens thanks to fatherly expectations and it was nice watching him shed his old habits and emotions and embrace his true self (with Wyn’s help). As you’d expect from a Jesse H Reign novel, this was very steamy once we got past the slow burn phase. I didn’t really understand why the sex needed to be transactional but Miller used the same tactic in ‘Rent: Paid in Full’ (the first book in the series) so it was in keeping with the series theme. It was basically Derek’s redemption story and I was totally enthralled. 🎧 Kirt Graves as his comedic best as Wyn while Shannon’s deeper growl really suited Derek—perfect voice casting for both characters!

Demanding boss falls for snarky PA!
