Publisher's Summary

Something wicked this way comes…and it might be too late to stop it.

Xander Corey lives simply, sustainably, on the outskirts of Osprey, a small, quaint town in Upstate New York. He’s a librarian when the town’s budget can afford him, a good friend, kind neighbor, and also, a witch. And while that’s of no concern to anyone around him, there are others, non-humans, who have a vested interest in Xander’s family land. Xander knows something dark and dangerous is brewing. He’s just not quite sure what.

And that’s not the only mystery he’s dealing with. The new chief of police is, by turns, giving him heart palpitations and homicidal thoughts. Xander can’t decide if the gorgeous yet infuriating Lorne MacBain is on his side, or trying to drive him insane. Added to that, the man doesn’t believe in magic, and since that’s who Xander is, their future looks anything but bright.

But Lorne is not the unimaginative, stick-in-the-mud Xander thinks he is. And a rock to anchor him as his life is turning upside down is just the thing Xander needs. Now if only the two of them can stay alive….

Excellent

I read 'Woods of the Raven' yesterday in one sitting, then purchased it on Audible and listened to it throughout the day. This is the book I would recommend to anyone. It's extremely well written, well researched and just wonderful world building in which I wish I lived. I love the Norse mythology connected with this book. I'm always pleased when I purchase anything written by Ms. Calmes. I'm really hoping for another book, a sequel perhaps so I get to experience more of Xander's magic and his ongoing love with Chief of Police Lorne McBain.
Greg Trembley/ Boudreau did an awesome job with his narration. in the past I've had a hard time listening to him because the second MC always sounds a little like a high-pitched female. He didn't do that in this book which I truly appreciate. Both MC's sounded like men but had destinctive voices. I loved Lorne's subtle Boston accent. I cannot stress enough how fantastic the narration was every character was so distinctive and just perfect. This book will definitely go in my favorites collection which sadly to say as of late I haven't been able to add a lot to it. can't wait for more of Mary Calmes she is an auto purchase for me. Again Mr. Trembley/Boudreax great job. I'll be looking forward to listening to more from you.
This is two days later now and I can't get over what an awesome job Greg Trembley did with this very entertaining and well written book. I have over 1500 books in my Audible library and you have made it into my top four. I wish I could say 10 but I only have four. JF Hardings narration of Cut & Run series, Tristan James narration of Ms. Calmes Marshalls series, Adam Norths narration of Hell and High Water series and yours Mr. Trembley. There is no order to this, they are just favorites. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

Loved this story!

Both the story and the narration were amazing! There was humor, there was some heartbreak. I wish it was the beginning of a series!

Perfect Cozy Fall Read!

This one was so rich. Beautiful story and pros. Xan is a witch, Lorne is a cop so never the twain should meet but they do in the most adorable way. I love all the misguided attempts from Lorne to get Xan's attention, they are so funny. The town is cozy and comfy. Strong and fun side characters. This one has all the fun fall feels with a fantastical plot full of mystery and a bit of danger. Of course this author never disappoints on a sweet HEA. Greg Tremblay does a truly wonderful job on the narration. I highly recommend the Audio!

It’s me again…

…the one who can never decide whether to hate or love Mary Calmes. It’s been quite awhile since I’ve checked in on her newer works. This one…definitely not one of my favorites. It will not be a re-listen. It had the usual Calmes-esque things like the uber-lovable main character who is a little too likable, with the woman best friend who takes no crap, and the main love interest who is a little too gruff, a little dense, but a marshmallow inside. Like usual, Calmes weaves an interesting world, this one with witches and fae and rifts and demon animals I couldn’t pronounce if I tried. It was a little too…I don’t know, blah? The house, *cough* cottage, was the most charming part of the book. It’s an amusing tale, but I can’t imagine you would be missing literary greatness if you skipped it.

Too much dandelions and unicorns

Well, the summary did promise a feel good story. Witch Xander was too much of a Mary Poppins for me: he’s a sock knitting, muffin baking, puppies-N-kittens saving, magical wreath making, and community supporting guy who excels at everything, including being a super-duper powerful branded witch.

With a too perfect Xander came a mystery involving dead girls and a series of attacks easily rebuffed before you could say “info dump.” Between Xander’s power and the convenient (and completely random) appearance of powerful allies, the fight scenes followed the same formula: (1) villain appears, mistakes Xander for a puny mage and talks way too much about the evil plan, (2) Xander calls upon his super-duper witch powers, and (3) [insert name of ally] appears and helps Xander dispatch villain.

The romance was equally easygoing, with only the briefest kerfuffle in the beginning. No sooner do Lorne and Xander clear the air, then without so much as a single date, the two are showering together. From there it’s insta everything, including Lorne accepting all of the new magical beasties and realities with merely a “give me a second … okay, how can I be the bestest, most understanding teddy bear ever” comment.

Maybe because of the cuteness level, I found the occasional “Jesus F g Chr” comment and the sex scenes to be jarring. I don’t think I’ll be seeking out anything more by this author.

Could this be the next harry potter series?

This book was phenomenal! As I listened along with this book, my imagination ran wild, and I could totally see this book being turned into a major motion picture movie! It has just the right amount of magic to be understood, while also having potential for much more! The storyline kept me captivated throughout its entirety. I am looking forward to hearing the following books!

Another gift

Mary Calmes is an automatic buy for me. She’s my favorite MM author and she never disappoints. This book is another gift from her. Enchanting, lovely, exciting & beautiful. I finished it in one day because I didn’t wan it to end. Greg Tremblay’s narration was nothing short of perfection. He brought this story to vivid life & gave the characters a whole new depth. Absolutely loved it!

bloody brilliant!

Mary Calmes is a favourite of mine for a number of reasons. Her writing is constantly excellent, and I know I'm going to get a banger of a story when I pick a book of hers to listen to/read.
This was no exception 😊 great story, characters with depth and world building that I could see if I closed my eyes - benefit of listening over reading 😉 I have been in a major slump recently and self medicate with stories. The angst was minimal in this story, which was just what I needed.
Greg Tremblay is in the premier league when it comes to narration. He doesn't just read the story, you get a performance. You live the story through his delivery. Each character has a clear voice of their own, I loved the very subtle accent that he gave to Lorne 😍
I loved this one, and it's firmly in my queue for another listen already!
Calmes and Tremblay - unbeatable combination! xxx
