About this listen

When supernatural secrets collide, it’ll take more than coffee to brew the perfect love.

When Ky Hernández bonded with his familiar, Zuri, his life changed forever. Their connection turned him into a practicing witch and led him to his calling as a medimagical professional. However, it totally tanked his love life - what guy would settle for eternal second place behind a parrot?

So, Ky keeps his witchy nature under wraps and sticks to hookups with humans, which can never go anywhere. But the mouthwatering barista at the coffee shop next door makes him thirst for more than a caffeine fix.

The charms Ewan Jones uses to appear human are inconvenient, disorienting, and necessary. Ewan and his siblings are achubyddion, metaphysical healers whose powers are coveted by unscrupulous supernatural beings.

And let’s face it: All supes are unscrupulous, given the right incentive. He’s grateful for the protections that hide his little family and for the barista job that keeps them housed and fed. He’s just so lonely. And his regular Ky, the super-hot, commitment-averse EMT, seems like the perfect candidate for a one-night shot at intimacy. After all, humans are no threat.

It takes a clumsy coffee shop intern, a mysterious werewolf epidemic, and one snarky parrot to unravel their pasts - and give them a chance at a future.

Male witch Ky Hernández channels the power of the triple goddess through his mouthy parrot, Zuri, as a supernatural paramedic / first-aid responder in Portland, OR. Ky is a love-em-and-leave-em type, since his closest bond is with Zuri. However, he isn’t prepared to want so much more after his first date with human barista Ewan Jones. But things are complicated for Ewan. For a start, he’s not human at all, he’s an achubyddion, a rare and highly prized race of metaphysical healers that the supernatural world tend to enslave and exploit, and he’s protecting two others of his race. But a deadly virus has started spreading through the supernatural world and Ewan and his siblings have to choose between doing the safe thing or the right and brave thing.

This may be my most favourite EJ Russell book of all time! This started off heartwarmingly small in Ewan’s coffee shop then just got more and more epic as the virus took hold and started striking down an increasing number of supes. Jordan, the impulsive werewolf, is one of my favourite characters and he plays a major role in this. Ky and Ewan had great chemistry and their growing affection for each other was so satisfying, but most satisfying was the tentative integration of the achubyddions into the wider supe community. This just ticked all my fantasy boxes: strong romance, great story, fantastic world building, a good mix of angst and humour, and a big fat HEA! 🎧 How is champion audio narrator Greg Boudreaux always so good? He handles the Welsh pronunciations, the many character voices, the laughter and the tears all perfectly!

Wow, just, wow!!
