About this listen

Fueled by a passion for running dogs, Gary Paulsen entered the Iditarod - the 1,180-mile sled-dog race through the Alaskan wilderness - in dangerous ignorance and with a fierce determination. For 17 days, he and his team of dogs endured blinding wind, snowstorms, frostbite, dogfights, moose attacks, sleeplessness, hallucinations - and the relentless push to go on.

Winterdance is the enthralling account of a "stunning wilderness journey of discovery and transformation" (Chicago Tribune), lived and told by "the best author of man-against-nature adventures writing today" (Publishers Weekly).

I loved this story, I didn't know anything about dog sledding and it was fascinating. It was more than this though and I loved reading Gary's personal story and connection to dogs and nature

Beautiful story

This is one of my all time favourites. As a reader, we’re transported from wherever we are, to Gary’s world, as he learns to run dogs.

This book is about so much more than running dogs. It is about life and how we can choose to live it, on our own terms.

A fine madness indeed

Very amusing. The madness that drives people not do things. The incredible dogs and the bonds between them and their humans.
