Publisher's Summary

They burned me and mine. I'm not done until I burn them and theirs in return.

Witch hunts have plagued the kingdom of Olyanath for decades. Thousands were slain due to the king’s paranoia of women who practice Senspiritic magic. No more.

Nye and his companions have seen enough of murder and misogyny. Fifteen years have passed since he joined the witch hunters, and now, at long last, an opportunity to destroy them from the inside reveals itself. An opportunity to overthrow the king and end his reign of cruelty. But 15 years of pretense have taken a toll. The strive for vengeance has steered Nye toward a path of violence and villainy. His hands are stained by the blood of countless innocents, his heart is scorched by grief, and his sanity hangs by a thread.

Even if he can kill the king and see this revolution through, it may not suffice to purge the voices from his head.

Wow just Wow!

Firstly, the cover is stunning and I would buy it purely for it to look pretty on my shelf... In fact I did haha.
I was hooked from the prelogue. It's the best opening I've read in a while and really sets the scene for the rest of the book.
I can't wait to see where Uri takes this series.

Winds of Strife is the first in the Dawnless Night series and debut by U.G Gutman and Wow! What a debut it is. A fantastic read for lovers of complex but easily understandable magic systems and lovers of dark fantasy (it is quite dark).

Please look up trigger warnings if you have them to ensure this is for you. In saying that though, Gutman has written some dark topics and scenes with such care. I have had many conversations around this and we have all agreed that the care taken with these topics was acknowledged and appreciated. The characters are for the most part all morally grey. They are flawed and do wicked things but aren't necessarily bad. Gutman doesn't pussyfoot around the manipulation and abuse in these pages or tell you that it's bad. He simply states what is and leaves it to the reader to decide who they do and don't like. I appreciate nothing was spoon fed to us though I did find myself conflicted at times for sympathising with particular characters.

I had already partly read the book wjen the audio came out and was intrigued when I saw Amanda Cobb was the narrator as Nye is male. But the voice of madness!!! She does it so well!! I know the character that inspired that voice and I'm sure when you listen you will pick it up too. Amanda did it to perfection.

I felt like this dark fantasy had a lot of depth in character, world building and MAGIC SYSTEM (it was soooo great!!) I don't want to say too much about the MS because I found it so fun to discover myself and don't want to ruin it for anyone else.

Ok I'm waffling now. Bottom line of this review... READ THIS BOOK I recommend immersion reading as the Audio is fantastic and it's a totally different experience reading along. It's *chef's kiss*

Great debut!!

Winds of Strife is a VERY solid debut of the author U.G Gutman! He has been able to create a compelling world with a thrilling story where the nights are getting longer and longer and the only way to stop them seems to be hunting down witches. To achieve it, the king uses the Harbingers, a group of warriors that are able to harness magic (yeah, magic!!!) to their purpose.

So, let's talk about the magic!! Very reminiscent of Brandon Sanderson's magic, Winds of Strife has a magic system that follows very clear rules! (we have witches and magical powers but they don't spontaneously do whatever they like!) The magic is based on emotions (how cooool is that? - very very cool!)

The characters are gray, like really gray! and we have some trigger warnings about mental illnesses & physical abuse... but the author makes it work! It doesn't have clearly hateful characters (well, just one, lol!) and all of them do good and bad stuff- I think that's the magic of this book, to be honest!

All in all, a great book if you want to jump into a new world with a great magic system!!

A Great debut for both the author and the series!

I really enjoyed this one.
The world building and magic system were top notch (very Sanderson-esque) and gripped me from the very start.
The morally grey (dark grey) characters were interesting, if somewhat one note.
The ending was not as climactic as I may have hoped, but that left me wanting to know more about what's going to happen next, and I'll definitely check out the next one.

All in all, a great debut, and a great first book in the series. Hope the author builds on it to reach even higher.

A Great Debut

I am a little late writing my review here. Winds of Strife is a great debut for an author whose career I look forward to following very closely. The Story we get here is one of madness, darkness, and the struggle to be better. Nye is a character that you want to root for but struggle with to justify his actions. I supposed my biggest suggestion to all is that If you are looking for a book that tackles emotional, mental, and physical abuse through the eyes of fantasy look no further.
In this book, we deal with many issues on morality and if the ends do justify the means. The magic system alone is unique and well developed. The characters are well fleshed out and highly dynamic and there is a little something for everyone in this story. Overall this was a solid 4/5. I really enjoyed this book. I have the physical and the Audio. With a fantastic narrator and high quilty physical copies. Any way you consume Winds of Strife promises to be an enjoyable experience.

grimdark. meets hard magic system !

Excellent doubt book, it has its flaws, but the world-building and crazy magic system (obviously influenced by Sanderson), in addition to the grimdark vibe, make the book worth the ride. This book deals with certain heavy topics such as mental illness and abuse, very thought-provoking but not meant to be read by all readers. If you like Sanderson's magic system and writing style with a grimdark, feel this book is for you!

Bloody good first book

This was a bloody excellent first book in a series. I need to think on my thoughts but I just wanna gush about it.
Firstly the characters were excellent, be it the complicated Nye, Ivy the princess who starts as a pawn in everyones game, Diane a witch with a dark history and relationship with Nye, and the wicked King Aliddar. Each character was interesting from their first meeting but getting to see them over the book was excellent, especially Nye, he was captivatingly dark.
The magic system was interesting and complex, and it was nice to have it slowly explained over the course of the book.
The plot was fast paced and kept me hooked, I couldn't put it down as each new chapter had me wanting to read the next.
I also liked how the plot dealt with abuse, and control, and the cyclical nature of it
Overall Im so happy I picked this up, it was an excellent dark fantasy romp, with compelling characters and a really cool magic system.
The narration was also excellent, and I look forward to listening to more by the narrator

Witches are haunted in Olyanath, for a reason.

Winds of strife has a great storytelling, filled with minor memes, Easter eggs, great characters, a story filled with sadness and hope. A journey in a universe that couldn't be farther than our own yet felt so familiar.
A great look over the ideals in a blind hatered and fear conquered by valor and cunningness, I loved it very much!
Lovers of V for vendetta, Attack on Titan, magic, fantasy and great fights will enjoy this book immensely.

Fantasy-horror with emotion driven magic system!

As a character driven reader, I say that this book is awesome! These characters are so morally grey and it makes them so interesting to follow. My feelings towards Nye are confused, but that's a good thing, I like following him but don't agree with what he does.
The magic system of this world is great to explore too. I like that there are consequences for the use of magic to the person using it. Really enjoyed this and woupd recommend if uou like fantasy mixed with horror (dark themed fantasy).
