Winding Road

By: Clare Sladden
Narrated by: Dacre Montgomery, Yael Stone, Noni Hazelhurst, David Berry, Bernard Fanning, Clementine Ford
  • Summary

  • Famous musician William Hamilton, vanished from the Maleny Hinterlands in 1994 under puzzling circumstances — no one has seen or heard from him since. When two podcasters, Adam and Simon, decide to solve the 25-year-old mystery, they travel with Lilly, William’s youngest daughter, to the secluded Hamilton estate for a long weekend. Lilly has granted the pair unprecedented access to the reclusive Gloria, William’s wife, who hasn’t given an interview since he disappeared. But when they arrive, they find Gloria in a state of mental decline and they’re not the only ones searching for answers. Lilly’s older sister, Norah – a musician who lives in the shadow of her absent father – is desperate to discover the truth from Gloria before it’s lost for good. Yet William’s sister Rachel is fiercely uncooperative and there even seems to be an intruder on the property. The deeper Adam and Simon get with their investigation, the more the lines between voyeur and subject become blurred. As events reach a shattering climax, it becomes clear that somebody is willing to go to violent lengths to uncover the dark secrets at the heart of this famous family....

Written and directed by Clare Sladden and performed by a stellar cast including Dacre Montgomery (Stranger Things), Yael Stone (Orange Is the New Black), Noni Hazlehurst (The End), David Berry (Outlander), Anna McGahan (Picnic at Hanging Rock), Bernard Fanning (Powderfinger), Gabrielle Rogers (All Saints) with original music performed by Bernard Fanning and Elana Stone (All Our Exes Live In Texas) and with special guest Clementine Ford (Fight Like a Girl).

Editorial reviews

Lines are blurred and dark secrets fiercely protected in the search for truth. Filled with twists, turns, and—surprisingly—tunes, Winding Road is a thriller podcast so compelling you will need to remind yourself it’s fiction.

Winding Road is an Australian homegrown production and not your typical mystery story. Follow the tale of two investigative podcasters who set out to solve a decades-old crime: the vanishing of a musician at the height of his fame. Original music and an original plot set the scene and will keep you riveted. Byron Shire born-and-bred Clare Sladden wrote and directed this Audible exclusive, which is narrated and performed by a celebrated Australian multicast, including Bernard Fanning (Powderfinger) and Yael Stone (Orange Is the New Black).

Produced by Audible Original and Screen Queensland, Winding Road was studio recorded with socially distanced cast members in Brisbane and Sydney. With production taking place during the COVID-19 pandemic, there were temperature checks, untouched scripts, and distanced microphones behind the scenes. Not your typical production process for not your typical fiction podcast.

Download Winding Road for a performance that will have you hooked from the first note and plot twist ‘til the stunning end. This Australian produced podcast can aptly be described as thrilling, gripping, entertaining, and altogether unique.

You won't want to stop listening the entire time.

This story is incredibly compelling and told in a masterful way by a very talented crew. It feels like you're watching a movie that you don't want to pause the entire time - there's so much suspense and it's impossible to guess what's going to happen at the end.

Clare Sladden and Danielle Redford have expertly directed and produced this production, pulling together some of Australia's best actors who tell the story beautifully.

The cherry on top of a suspenseful and engaging story is the music performances, particularly Bernard Fanning's William Hamilton and Elana Stone's Norah. 5/5 stars, highly recommend.

The best thing 2020 has produced.

This podcast is hypnotic. It has a power to draw you in seldom heard in this medium. Thr plot is solid. The twists and turns are genuinely surprising. The voice acting, music and background sound engineering is awesome. Such a well constructed production.

A unique delivery

I loved the story foremat with the individual characters speaking 'live' and the way the story unfolded. when I downloaded it, I thought it was going to be an actual podcast so it was great to find out was a play about a podcast instead. The music was good too.

Captivating

I have tried other titles that did not thrill me. I was recommended this title by friends and Im so glad I did. I have been hooked since the first stum of the original music score and the building storylines. It feels like a show for my ears and imagination. Share the word or sound for that matter its a brilliant series
