Publisher's Summary

Drawn in by the reputation of the islands, a new English family move to the area, eager to give their autistic son a better life. But when a young nanny’s body is found hanging in the barn of their home, rumours of her affair with the husband begin to spread like wildfire.

With suspicion raining down on the family, DI Jimmy Perez is called in to investigate, knowing that it will mean the return to the islands of his on-off lover and boss Willow Reeves, who will run the case. Perez is already facing the most disturbing investigation of his career when Willow drops a bombshell that will change his life forever. Is he ready for what is to come?

Another great book.

I really love this series and book 8 does not disappoint. Ann Cleeves is a gifted writer who is able to transport her readers to another world.

Satisfactory resolution, but no more.

I agree with other reviewers about this not being the best Shetland book. I only persevered with it because it was the last one in the series. I didn't feel engaged with the story. As usual, there's no real clue about who the guilty one is going to be. Ann Cleeves just seems to select somebody during the last half hour, then produces information that we didn't previously know to explain why they did it.

I got the impression that this was just written as a contractual obligation, and that the writer didn't feel any need to interest us in buying further Shetland books after this one.

I personally thought the book gave a satisfactory resolution to the on/off relationship between Jimmy Perez and Willow Reeves, and also a satisfactory end to the series.

Disappointing

I really struggled with this book, the plot is highly questionable and the ending is really poor!!

Disappointed

The whole storyline is too bland. I love the Shetland books but this had a rushed feel like jimmy was just going through the motions. The bit with Cassie is not jimmy, willow is too ambitious to change so drastically. 😢

Like all her stetland books gripping,<br />

the books are all great, just a shame the tv series isn't the same, she really makes all the characters come alive, and the mood of the islands, just FAB.

Another gripping tale

I can always depend on Ann Cleeves to give me a gripping tale that is layered with believable characters, wonderful descriptions of the places that make you feel like you are actually there too...and of course a plot that keeps my interest right to the end. I dislike books that frighten...not my thing at all...but this had enough to make my heart thump a bit harder at times. Yes...a great book altogether!

Good as always.

Ann Cleeves always delivers good listening. The narrator too adds authenticity to the story. Great.

Sad that this is the last Shetland Book.

Ann Cleeves tells a superb tale as usual and the suspense lasts till the last page.
I had an audio book and for me the audio was spoilt by the accent Kenny Blyth adopted for Jimmy Perez, which sounded more Welsh than Scottish. Pity they couldn’t get a Scots reader.
