Publisher's Summary

In the drought-ridden rangelands of Western Australia, Gabe Ahern makes his living trapping wild dogs for local station owners.

Still coming to terms with his wife's death - and the part he played in it - the old bushman leads a solitary life. Until one morning, when he rescues a young Afghan man, Altair, from certain execution.

Now, with a gang of people smugglers on his tail and the lives of Altair's family on the line, Gabe is drawn into a ruthless game of cat and mouse. His main opponent is Chase Hunter, a kangaroo hunter with bush skills as wily and sharp as his own.

As the old dogger and roo-shooter go head to head, Gabe will need all his cunning to come out of this alive.

A gripping tale

Not for the faint hearted or nervous.
An intriguing story line with so many twists and turns.
The characters come alive in the descriptions and the end / climax does not disappoint with all the ‘loose ends are cleverly’ closed off. Would definitely recommend.

A rocking fast paced outback adventure

Fast paced with great characters, full of reluctant and unlikely heroes and humans, alongside the unethical bent baddies. The story was well narrated and I liked the empathetic slant towards refugees, and the positive optics concerning Aboriginal Australia. It kept me enthralled all the way.
I’m waiting for the film.

Well constructed thriller

Gripping narrative and nicely book-ended by the dingo observer. Well drawn Australian characters and colourful Outback setting.

Raw remote reality

The beginning of this story helps set the major assumption turn of the protagonist Gabe, the old dogger. Michael Trant provided such realism setting a harsh outback solitary life of a damaged man. Clever use of behaviour descriptions build the plot which skews everything when Gabe cannot unsee or not react to a situation that unfolds before him… clever twists and tension threaded through a humanitarian dilemma. I’ll be looking for this author again. Narrator was brilliant!
