Ikbal kam mit ihren Eltern Anfang der 60er-Jahre nach Deutschland. Sie wuchs in der schwäbischen Kleinstadt Memmingen auf. Im Vergleich zu vielen anderen türkischen Kindern hatte Ikbal ausschließlich deutsche Freundinnen. Sie fühlte sich mehr deutsch als türkisch, schrieb deutsche Gedichte und war die erste Türkin, die in einer Bank in Memmingen angestellt wurde. Aber die strengen moralischen Vorstellungen ihrer Eltern erlaubten ihr nicht, das Leben ihrer deutschen Freundinnen zu teilen. Nach einem gescheiterten Ausbruchversuch bekam sie Depressionen und versuchte sich das Leben zu nehmen. Mit 28 Jahren entschloss sie sich, ihrer Familie in die Türkei zu folgen. Ihre deutsche Freundin aus der Jugendzeit besucht sie nach 18 Jahren in Izmir. Ikbal hat sich in ihrer fremden Heimat Türkei gut eingelebt. In der Begegnung mit ihrer Freundin erinnert sie sich noch einmal an ihre Kindheit und ihre Zerrissenheit zwischen zwei Kulturen und zwei Identitäten.
