Publisher's Summary

Why Mummy Drinks is the brilliant novel from Gill Sims, the author of the online sensation Peter and Jane.

It is Mummy's 39th birthday. She is staring down the barrel of a future of people asking if she wants to come to their advanced yoga classes, and polite book clubs where everyone claims to be tiddly after a glass of Pinot Grigio and says things like 'Oooh gosh, are you having another glass?'

But Mummy does not want to go quietly into that good night of women with sensible haircuts who 'live for their children' and stand in the playground trying to trump each other with their offspring's extracurricular activities and achievements, and boasting about their latest holidays.

Instead, she clutches a large glass of wine, muttering 'FML' over and over again. Until she remembers the gem of an idea she's had....

Oh so very true...and very funny

I loved Why Mummy Drinks. Mums and non-Mums alike will identify with the main character Ellen who is very typical of 21st century middle class women: trying to be all things to all people (kids, partners, friends, family, work), doing an amazing job, but always feeling like they are failing in some way. Sims taps into this in an amusing laugh-out-loud way, leaving you feeling like it's totally okay to feel the way you do - because everyone seems to go through it at some stage.
Great performance by Gabrielle Glaister, who brings her comedic acting chops to the reading.

Truly a Laugh-Out-Loud Experience

Let me preface my review by noting that the author pulls no punches when it comes to extremely "salty" language. So this novel probably is not for the faint of heart. For everyone else ... read on!

I have very high standards when it comes to humor. TV shows, books written by comedians, my husband ... the exceptions are few and far between. When I read reviews promising laughs galore, I'm skeptical.

So, Why Mummy Drinks is a rare and precious find. I actually not only laugh out loud - a lot - but even throw my head back to do so, every now and then. The narrator's interpretation, pacing, and deadpan delivery, are simply tailor-made for this novel.

Because the author is British, many of her expressions and expletives are not commonly used here in the US ... but they are simply spot-on and I long to incorporate them into my own salty repertoire.

Ms Sims takes stock characters - perfect moms, latter-day hippies, intrusive relatives - to the next level. And her writing style is a treat, as well - the phraseology, the similes, etc - are delightful.

In short - if you are a free spirit with a sense of humor, this Bud is for you!

Very Funny!

Would you listen to Why Mummy Drinks again? Why?

Absolutely. It was just that funny to me. And i don't even drink.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Ellen. I think we (mothers) think like her we just don't say it. And she loves her dog - what could be better?

What does Gabrielle Glaister bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

She did an excellent job with the voices.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

Not sure.

Any additional comments?

I never review books but I felt I had to with this one as i very much enjoyed this book. If you enjoy British comedy DO NOT let this book pass you by. I laughed out loud many times while driving down the road.

Soundtrack of My Life

If you change the narrator to a black woman from the south then this would basically be the soundtrack of my life. Why Mummy Drinks makes me feel so much less crazy but simultaneously makes me realize how crazy I look to everyone else all at once. But I love this book and I absolutely recommend it to Mums everywhere. Turns out we're all a little nuts.

Bloody brilliant

I had to pause frequently to stop myself peeing my pants from laughing so bloody hard. This story is so honest and so raw that I wanted to make the character my best friend and move in next door to be bff’s. Bought it for everyone I know.

Laughing out loud

I enjoyed this book so much I told all my friends about it! As a mum, it struck many chords. as a wife, it rang true. As a working woman struggling to balance everything, it was especially true. I particularly appreciated that the author chose not to take the protagonist down predictable paths, and that she made the protagonist have to rethink her opinions (just like real people do.)

I highly recommend this book...as long as you're not squeamish about someone who swears a lot! (if swearing bothers you, this is definitely NOT your book!)

Really Naff - Dull

I had such high hopes for this - I love the FB page. I'm a full time middle class working Mum - I hoped this book was for me. It was not.

This is basically a re-run of the FB page, made to be a story, which has no real story line and is complete nonsense.

It's starts funny but it's a repeat of the same old stuff and gets boring not exciting. It's ends up being complete rubbish of drunken middle class dribble. The story line with the Eco Sister is horrific and so far fetched.

The book made me want to scream "stand up for yourself woman" about 100 times. You need a bottle of wine to get through one chapter.

Loved this book!

I really liked this book. It is very much a book of today and all the fads discussed are very current. It is just so true though and I identified so much with the characters and the plot. It always seems to occur on train stations for me, I get to a bit that was just so funny I started crying with laughter and people give you very odd stares. Not one to listen to when not wearing headphones as the language is pretty ripe. Being a man, I wondered if Elaine sees her husband in the same way that my wife sees me! If that is the case then - oh dear! I really recommend this if you fancy a good lighthearted listen and the narrator was perfect.
