About this listen

In 1976, Francis Beaumont spirited 11-year-old Kim Chown and her brother away from their mother to Africa, where he had taken a job as a university lecturer. There, behind a veneer of respectability, he terrorised and brutalised his own child, Kim, sexually and emotionally abusing her several times a day.

Only aged 20 did Kim feel able to escape from him, descending into alcoholism, after her siblings and mother refused to help her seek justice. But after almost ending her own life, Kim fought back. With the support of her husband and adult children, she finally faced him in court and won justice for his shocking crimes.

This is one woman's inspiring true story of overcoming harrowing abuse to build a happy life - against all odds.

Thankyou so much for having the courage you had to write this book.
Today I sent a message to family members that I have been needing to send for a long time.
I’m slowly getting more brave and moving forward.
Well done Kim!

Thankyou

Such a heart wrenching story. Very difficult to listen to at times due to the violence Kim endured but what incredible strength she has.
Beautifully narrated too. I was hooked from the first paragraph.

First of all, having just finished listening to this incredible book, I want to say to Kim how courageous you are!
I am so very sorry you had to endure such a horrific childhood and you weren’t supported and loved as you should have been.
I am thankful that you have a wonderful husband and children, and I am so proud of YOU even though I don’t know you, that you have fought so hard in your recovery.
This book made me cry, made me angry, literally all the emotions. You are so strong to write it. It’s sure it will help many others.
Five stars from beginning to end!!

I have read many books that foster parents have written about the abuse the children have gone through that they have looked after but what Kim has endured has to be the most horrendous story of all. Her father is an absolute monster. I wish Kim all the very best for the future. May God bless her and her family.

Horrendous story

Another story we should all take in.
What goes on in peoples lives and what people get away with.
A crime that lives next door, in our families, amongst our friends.
Thank you to the author…wish there had been someone, anyone to help the little girl that needed help so much.

I found this story almost too gruelling to continue and yet impossible to put down. The bravery and stoic stance of this author is truly inspirational. I think everyone should read this book - it shows how shining the light on these dark crimes can shift the shame and blame back onto their rightful owner- the perpetrator, who too often is never held to account.

Piercingly honest and brave- an incredible gift
