Publisher's Summary

In America to escape the violence that nearly killed him, forensics expert David Hunter has returned to the Body Farm in Tennessee. He needs to know whether he's still up to the job of confronting death. So when his former mentor asks him to accompany him to a crime scene, he agrees. But even he is unprepared for what awaits them in the remote cabin.

The victim has been tortured, the body decomposed beyond recognition. Although fingerprints seem to identify the killer, Hunter is uneasy. Then a second body is found. And it becomes clear that they're dealing with a killer who is dangerously familiar with the intricacies of forensics. Has David Hunter met his match?

"Menacing, beautifully paced and with characters that wouldn't disgrace the incomparable Michael Connelly, this marks Beckett's transition to established star." ( Daily Mail)

Well worth a read

Simon Beckett just seems to be getting better and better and this book did not disappoint. Just when you thought you had it all worked out there was a twist and it continued twisting and turning right to the very end. I stayed awake until 2 am because I just couldn't leave it.

The forensic research that has gone into writing this book has been amazing as has the attention to detail.

I must commend the narrator who brilliantly switched so effortlessly between different American dialects and the English accent of David Hunter.

Well worth a read.

I agree - excellent narration!

I completely agree with the last reviewer, David Thorpe is an excellent narrator who can adapt his voice to the various characters in the book. I never struggle to distinguish one character from another and this is obvious even within the first 15 minutes! This is the second of the Dr Hunter novels narrated by David Thorpe and he does an excellent job. The story itself moves along at a great pace and this book is as enjoyable as the other two - bring on book four!

Excellent narration!

Unlike the other reviewer, I thought the narrator was very good indeed. In fact, I have several other audio books which he has narrated by this and other authors, and what impresses me greatly is his ability with widely differing accents. This particular book calls for American deep-South voices, and, as far as I can tell, he succeeds well and accurately with them. Other books I have heard him read call for a whole range of accents, including Glaswegian and Highland Scottish and each voice is entirely different and easily recognisable from another. As for this book, as ever, Simon Beckett writes an absorbing and tense thriller and I find all his work well written and very satisfying. I look forward to his next one.

So entertaining

This is the first Simon Beckett book I've listened to but it won't be the last. Made all the more good by David Thorpe's narration.

Sorry couldn't get past the first chapter.

Love this writer and this series of books so I'm really sorry to be negative about this audio book. The narrator ruined this for me, the odd pauses at the end of sentences and even odder emphasis on everything. The older narrator of other David Hunter book hits the character better. I apologise again I think I'm going to read the book instead as love these stories.

Decent story

An engaging story with an interesting main character, and a decent supporting cast. Nice surprise at the end, when we find out who the baddie was. A first-person story, but with slightly annoying second-person narrative from the baddie, and an irritating, but brief, section of third person narrative. Come on, Simon, please stick to one POV. The narrator did a decent job with accents and different voices for the characters, but left lots of slightly odd pauses between sentences which broke the flow a little for me.

Another winner!

Well written, full of details that have apparently been well researched, good narration, a bit far fetched but then again that's what this genre is all about

Well narrated, excellent story...

My first David Hunter novel, but not my last, which is gloriously thrilling and has loads of twists and turns. Has gore so not for the squeamish. Full of forensic detail and has very little romance or sex scenes....hooray! Well worth anybodies money or credit...
