Publisher's Summary

"Today, Cindy and I ran away and killed an old lady. It was lots of fun." (Shirley Wolf's journal, June 14, 1983)

Shirley Wolf and Cindy Collier met in a juvenile detention center and had known each other for only a few hours when they decided to escape and randomly kill a stranger.

They would go to a senior condominium center in Auburn, California, where they would seek an elderly victim.

They would find one in the 85-year-old Anna Brackett. They entered her home under the ruse that they needed to use the phone to call their parents.

The girls would brutally murder the elderly woman in a crime so shocking that deputy sheriffs were initially in denial that two young girls would commit such a crime.

But how did they get to the point mentally where they could commit such a horrid act?

This is the story of how they got there.
