Story
One by one, she undid each event, each decision, each choice. If Davy had remembered to put on a coat. If Seamie McGeown had not found himself alone on a dark street. If Michael Agnew had not walked through the door of the pub on a quiet night in February in his white shirt. There is nothing special about the day Cushla meets Michael, a married man from Belfast, in the pub owned by her family. But here, love is never far from violence, and this encounter will change both of their lives forever.

Story
The first drops start to fall when Quinn spies the body. With no reception and nothing but an empty road for miles, does she stop to help or keep driving to safety? Back at the iconic country pub where Quinn works, Andrea is sandbagging the place in preparation for heavy rains. Alone with her sleeping son in the back room, she reluctantly lets a biker in to wait out the storm. Out on the wet roads, tensions arise among four backpackers on their way to Darwin. They haven’t prepared for this kind of weather and the flooding isn’t the only threat on the horizon.

The perfect marriage? Or the perfect lie? Jack has looks and wealth; Grace has charm and elegance. You might not want to like them, but you do. You'd like to get to know Grace better. But it's difficult, because Jack and Grace are never apart. Some might call this true love. Others might ask why Grace never answers the phone. And why there are bars on one of the bedroom windows. He is a dashing young sailor imprisoned unjustly for treason. While in prison he meets a holy man who imparts to him all his wisdom. The "abbe" also divulges the profound secret of a hidden treasure. Nina can never forgive Maggie for what she did. And she can never let her leave.
They say every house has its secrets, and the house that Maggie and Nina have shared for so long is no different. Except that these secrets are not buried in the past.
Every other night, Maggie and Nina have dinner together. When they are finished, Nina helps Maggie back to her room in the attic, and into the heavy chain that keeps her there. Because Maggie has done things to Nina that can’t ever be forgiven, and now she is paying the price.
But there are many things about the past that Nina doesn’t know, and Maggie is going to keep it that way - even if it kills her.
Because in this house, the truth is more dangerous than lies.

Absolutely brilliant
Wow. Just WOW.
This is one of the most unputdownable books I've come across. Just when you think you know what's going on, the plot twists and sends you off in a completely different direction. I spent just about the entire length of it puzzling over who had done what to whom, who was the bad guy and who was the victim.
Elizabeth Knoweldon is possibly the most talented voice actor in audio books. Her narration was riveting and with her ability to switch between characters and their ages you'd be forgiven for thinking there were three different women telling the story.
Ten star narration for a ten star book!

Narrator was brilliant. I started listening to this and was so sure I had it figured out which initially disappointed me that it was so predictable. But, I did not have it figured out at all. Kept me hooked and I would always think about what was coming next when I wasn’t listening to it.

Too predictable
I kept waiting for the supposed ‘twists and turns’ that other reviews gave, yet they were very lacklustre. I listened to the in in hope that the plot would take an unexpected turn, there was none. The performance was good, just very disappointed in the storyline.

There are so many audiobooks I don’t purchase purely because I can’t get past the narration. This book passed that initial test and then continued to wow. I did not want to do anything else but finish it. Fast paced, unpredictable, sad. You never know who you are rooting for. The ending kicked me in the chest. Definitely not a fairy-tale.

Not For Me!
What Lies Between Us by John Marrs did not deliver what I expected. I did not like the storyline of abuse, incest, and murder. The author was vivid in his imagery, some of it more graphic than I wanted. The narrator, Elizabeth Knowelden performed the book quite well. She conveyed emotions effectively and were fitting of the scenes.

John Marrs does it again!!!!
Maggie and Nina take the complicated mother - daughter relationship to another level. The weight of their choices has its own gravitational pull and sucks in those who get to close with unmatched fury. John Marr unpacks his characters slowly, and doesn't mind if we don't like them because he'll ensure we understand them in the final act. If you like your novels to keep you guessing and aren't afraid of the darker side of human nature, you need to just read everything he's written. This is no exception. Brilliant narration as well!

So engaging! What a rollercoaster of a story!!!
WHAT?! WHAT DID I JUST READ Y'ALL? >0<
I'm pretty sure this has been the most HORRIFIC, TWISTED, MIND-BENDING, ROLLER-COASTER OF A HELLRIDE I have read in 2020 [and probably in a long time!] Queue me grabbing my imaginary trophy about to crown this as my favorite thriller of the year..!
I don't even know how I can go about trying to review this without spoilers, so I definitely wanna tread carefully here 0.0 ...!
We have Nina and we have Maggie. Nina is Maggie's daughter, and they've been a family for forever. Nina is her mum's caretaker and works a 9-5 and comes home to tend to her. Not exactly the amazing life one might imagine for themselves, but you would do anything for your family.. wouldn't you?
But as they say, suburbia is a place full of many secrets... and the past has quite the way with rearing its ugly head. As we observe the daily lives of Maggie and Nina as the reader, it is up to us to discover.. what lies between them. *queue The Twilight Zone sound effects*
You do NOT wanna miss this one y'all! Fellow psych thriller fans REJOICE - this IS the one you have been WAITING FOR!

Couldn’t Put It Down!!! So Good!!
NO SPOILERS! I love John Marrs books and they keep getting better. This book was very different and a true psychological thriller. The narration was phenomenal. The villains voice made me want to punch her in the face.. it’s that annoying.
This book had me engrossed and in the end left me completely satisfied. I highly recommend to anyone who likes domestic thrillers or psychological thrillers.

Captivating!
What Lies Between Us is one of the most dark and compelling psychological thrillers I’ve read this year. The story is seriously so messed up told between two unreliable narrators. Who do you believe? Who shall you trust? The story is disturbing and told from two point of views within multiple timelines. POV from Maggie and Nina, between the past and the present. Confusing? No, not at all. John Marrs is seriously becoming one of my all time favorite authors! His storytelling abilities is out of this world!!! His writing is so addiction leaving me wanting more and more. I highly recommend this one!!

Great
Loved that it kept me on my toes at all times, interesting story. At the beginning I thought I wasn't going to like it as I thought I had the book figured out but nope, took me by surprise.

Can’t finish it
I might come back to it at some later date but oh boy it is grim.
Got about 2 hours from the end and couldn’t stand the darkness anymore.
If you want to read about somebody held captive in a room during lockdown...then go ahead, but it’s very depressing, even without lockdown it’s too much. The worst possible things that can happen to a person goes on here. Don’t think it will be a very happy ending either.
Just going to read something about birds singing and spring now or take an anti depressant. Wish I hadn’t wasted a credit on it.

Chubby Checker would be pleased...
... by the twisted journey this book takes you on. I know John Marrs previous books have led us through Twistville and this one is no different. However, this one differs in that the story changes how you feel about the lead characters to such a point you just don't know what they are capable of next. The deceptive story climbs and climbs until you think you've reached the peak, only to find another, final twist (have I said twist enough?).
I only have praise for this tale. Written from the perspective of our leads, John at times leaves us heart wrenching for their plight, and at times wondering what despicable act will come next. Very clever, wickedly dark and at times shock inducing.
As this is Audible, I should mention the narrator. She has done a fantastic job, nailing the tone of the characters and adding to the sense that all is not right with them.
Overall, if you hadn't guessed, I loved this. Top drawer thriller from an elite writer. He must have a cold alter ego! Just joking, John!

OMG - THAT OLD LADY VOICE ... ABANDON BOOK!
Love some of John Marrs books - adore Elizabeth Knowelden but oh dearie dear dear dear that old lady character voice made me abandon this book in seconds - nails on a blackboard - I could not stand to listen any longer - maybe one for me to read rather than listen to. What a shame.

A great story and easy to follow.. but...
I love John Marrs's books and I've listened to all of them, my absolute favourite being The One which is easily on list of top 5 audiobooks. I don't wish to be unkind and I hope this comes across as constructive criticism, but Elizabeth Knowledon's reading really irritates me. She has a lovely voice, carries the story well, but her habit of being over dramatic in each sentence really throws it off. In a perfectly ordinary sentence she puts such dramatic emphasis on certain words and it bugs the hell out of me. like on a comedy show if someone is reading a dramatic poem and it just sounds wrong. Maggie WALKED up the DARK steps WONDERING if she should SAY something. Every single sentence. Admittedly, she did stop doing this around half way through the book so maybe one of the producers asked her to tone it down. Other than that, shes a brilliant narrator, and the narrator of a book is such a huge part of the experience- I almost returned the book but I'm glad I didn't because it did get much better.
The story is brilliant, John Marrs is brilliant at bringing each interwoven story together with characters you couldn't put together until he reveals why, and how.
It's a great book and done really well if you can ignore the dramatics in the first half, again I'm not trying to be unkind about the narrator, she really has a lovely voice and reads beautifully, it's just a habit I can't ignore.

A Survivor's Review
There are a lot of ways in which a person can be abused, or abusive. Having personally escaped a similar "locked room" abusive situation, I was intrigued to see how well the author would approach the subject. Very quickly the locked room aspect became the least of the abuses taking place and I found my sympathies shifting and changing, developing as the story itself developed.
I rarely leave reviews for books, if somebody has managed to write a novel, publish it and make a living at it, they don't need me to tell them they are doing well. In this case, I felt moved so powerfully, I had to say something. The reality of being imprisoned by somebody who claims to love you is something rarely experienced (though it does happen). Having "been there, done that", I'm in the perfect position to review Marrs' depiction of the situation. Has he done a good job? Oh yes! Of course, there are things which he hasn't included but since the captivity is the backbone of the story, it needed to be painted with broad strokes, which it was, with only a few close up details. The use of a bucket, instead of a toilet, being one such element, though in this case, it is frequently cleaned.
My only negative comment, with regard to the captivity, is that I felt it didn't fully capture the despair inherent in the situation. It may be that I am somewhat innured to that sort of situation but it seemed that the only reaction against the captivity was physical violence, there didn't appear to be much emotional or mental reaction.
Taking everything together, and after some time to consider, I would definitely recommend this book. There weren't any massive surprises (though there were a couple of "tail kinks", not quite twists but definitely bends) but the development of the story was sufficiently convoluted, that I was held riveted until the end. Just bear in mind, as you read it, that the captive character is only sharing a few of her feelings about that imprisonment.

Evil lives inside her
A book that will bring you nightmares and sympathy in equal measures... until the end washes away any sympathy you had...

The best book of the year!!
I have read a previous book this author passengers, which I also found an excellent read. This book though has to be the best book of 2020 so far so full of twists and turns so many well-defined characters the narration is absolutely superb and the definition between the voices is excellent, throughout the book you care about the characters even as the book becomes darker and darker and darker. I find myself not being able to stop listening while still trying to figure what was going to happen next.
This book keeps you guessing right until the very last page and the twists that happen throughout this book are not predictable and you do not see them coming and when they happen they hit you like a freight train which in turn encourages you to push forward just one more chapter and then another and then another and the next thing you know it's 2 AM and you have work in the morning!!
What I also liked about this book is that both characters deliver moral dilemmas and you yourself are torn for both the main characters fates and circumstances. If you have never read any of John Marrs books before Please do You won't be disappointed!! It will have you on the edge of your seat right until the last chapter and each twist will have you reeling in disbelief! I love this book and it will take me a while to recover…

Ever changing
In this original, sometimes difficult to believe, yet always entertaining story, a love love-hate relationship between mother and daughter leaves the reader to question who the baddy is. A series of horrors opens up and one can’t help wondering who is worse?
Nicely read
