Publisher's Summary

Gabriel Sand is separated from his family who are on their way to Oregon traveling the Oregon Trail. During an Indian attack, his family is wiped out. He rescues a young cavalry officer, Roger Painter, and they become friends. They are both saved by his big Missouri mule, Jack. He then becomes an agent for the Pony Express and acquires a new friend.

He folded his hands under his chin and fixed his gaze on the encampment below. There was a large fire glowing in the center of the wagon circle, and he could see several braves dancing around it. He was able to count nine doing the dancing, one beat on a small drum, and two who looked like older men were just sitting, observing the festivities. After watching for a few minutes, he crawled back to where Roger lay.

“I don’t know what’s going on,” said Gabe. “It’s the same bunch that killed Maybelle, and there is a couple of older Indians with them. The two older ones are wearing those fancy feather war bonnets.”
