Als der Detektiv 1887 erstmals in einer längeren Geschichte auftauchte, konnte niemand ahnen, welches glorreiche Schicksal ihm beschieden war. Fünf Jahre später hatte Conan Doyle es satt, immer wieder neue Taten seines Helden zu ersinnen, und er ließ ihn kurzerhand in den Reichenbachfällen in der Schweiz umkommen. Das Publikum aber konnte sich damit nicht abfinden. Der Autor holte den Totgesagten ins Leben zurück und betraute ihn noch mit einer Reihe schwierigster und gewagtester Aufgaben, die sein Freund Dr. Watson wiederum als stümperhafter Gehilfe mit ihm vollbringt. Der mit übermenschlichen Zügen ausgestattete Sherlock Holmes und der brave Dr. Watson waren längst zu mythischen Gestalten geworden, als Sir Arthur Conan Doyle 1930 starb. Andere Schriftsteller, auch ohne Zweifel größere, haben vor und nach ihm Detektivgeschichten und -romane verfasst.
