Doch je älter er wurde, desto mehr distanzierte er sich von der geschäftstüchtigen Rührseligkeit, die mittlerweile das "Fest der Liebe" bestimmte. Daher durchzieht ein Zwiespalt von Ehrfurcht und spöttischer Distanz die Betrachtungen und Gedichte, die Hesse über die Weihnachtszeit verfasst hat.
