Publisher's Summary

A trail of secrets. A dangerous discovery. A deadly turn.

Police officer Sebastian Clifford never planned on becoming a private investigator. But when a scandal leads to the disbandment of his London based special squad, he finds himself out of a job. That is, until his cousin calls on him to investigate her husband’s high-profile death, and prove that it wasn’t a suicide.

Clifford’s reluctant to get involved, but the more he digs, the more evidence he finds. With his ability to remember everything he's ever seen, he's the perfect person to untangle the layers of deceit.

He meets Detective Constable Bird, an underutilized detective at Market Harborough’s police force, who refuses to give him access to the records he’s requested unless he allows her to help with the investigation. Clifford isn't thrilled. The last time he worked as part of a team it ended his career. But with time running out, Clifford is out of options. Together they must wade through the web of lies in the hope that they’ll find the truth before it kills them.

Includes bonus story Nowhere to Hide.

Thriller and suspense

I really enjoyed this audio book. The narrator was excellent and accentuated the different characters well. I would recommend this first book of the series to all readers but especially to those females who often feel that their employers overlook natural talent and have an eye for detail
Men look holistically but females look at detail

Intriguing

I was hooked from the beginning. A nice racy story that had twists and turns.

GREAT BOOK TO JUST RELAX AND ENJOY

The storyline was simple but what keeps it interesting are the characters and the way they go about their investigation. I enjoyed the uncomplicatedness of the storyline along with the interaction between the two main characters.
The narrator was excellent.
I will not hesitate to buy the next in the series.

Web of Lies

A mostly enjoyable book if you can get past the narrator’s sulky voice of Birdy and his rendition of Twiggy’s old man voice even though he’s only 45. The emphasis on the action scenes by the narrator didn’t lend any extra excitement like it should have; it just seemed rusted for those pieces. Still, I look forward to reading about the next adventure of Clifford and Birdy

Disappointed

I’ve enjoyed all of this authors books in the other series.
I’m not sure if this series us earlier or later
The treatment and description of the female character is condescending while the description of the make main character is a strong aristocratic male
The male narrator speaks the female voices as squeaky and irritating, while again the males are voiced strongly
The story is slow to evolve but otherwise ok.
Wasn’t in the included so even more irritating that I used a credit for it

Not sure

Was disconcerting having Jonathon Keeble narrating this since the character and story similar to LJ Ross’s DCI Ryan series. The aristocratic detective trope seems never-ending,
Keeble’s narrations are generally good but he is weak on women’s voices and rendition of Birdy is dreadful.
