Story
This is my story, from a crumbling apartment in Central Falls, Rhode Island, to the stage in New York City, and beyond. This is the path I took to finding my purpose and my strength, but also to finding my voice in a world that didn't always see me. As I wrote Finding Me, my eyes were open to the truth of how our stories are often not given close examination. They are bogarted, reinvented to fit into a crazy, competitive, judgmental world. So I wrote this for anyone who is searching for a way to understand and overcome a complicated past, let go of shame and find acceptance.

The first story Selma Blair Beitner ever heard about herself is that she was a mean, mean baby. With her mouth pulled in a perpetual snarl and a head so furry it had to be rubbed to make way for her forehead, Selma spent years living up to her terrible reputation: biting her sisters, lying spontaneously, getting drunk from Passover wine at the age of seven and behaving dramatically so that she would be the centre of attention.

In this exquisite story of family, food, grief and endurance, Michelle Zauner proves herself far more than a dazzling singer, songwriter and guitarist. Story
When Gina Rushton admitted she had little time left to make the decision for herself, the magnitude of the choice overwhelmed her. Her search for her own 'yes' or 'no' only uncovered more questions to be answered. How do we clearly consider creating a new life on a planet facing catastrophic climate change? How do we reassess the gender roles we have been assigned? How do we balance ascending careers with declining fertility? How do we know if we've found the right co-parent, or if we want to go it alone, or if we don't want to do it at all?

Story
I love stories. I have mostly told other people's, but now, in telling my own, I realise how all our stories are connected by that great leveller of acclaim, loss, fortitude and fortune: being human. When I look at my life from the alleged halfway point, some patterns are revealed: one, that the story does not necessarily begin or end where it should; two, happy endings are overrated. And three, happy endings are almost never the end. This book is memoir-ish. A tell-most. Largely because there's a lot I don't remember, and a lot that's not worth talking about.

The relationship between the US and China, the world's two superpowers, is peculiarly volatile. It rests on a seismic fault of cultural misunderstanding, historical grievance and ideological incompatibility. No other nations are so quick to offend and be offended. Former Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd, who has studied, lived in and worked with China for more than 40 years, is one of the very few people who can offer real insight into the mindsets of the leadership whose judgement will determine if a war will be fought.

In the process, he considers talent at work in venues as diverse as a music school in Dallas and a tennis academy near Moscow to demonstrate how the wiring of our brains can be transformed by the way we approach particular tasks.

Publisher's Summary
The star of Marvel’s first Asian superhero film, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, tells his own origin story of being a Chinese immigrant, his battles with cultural stereotypes and his own identity, becoming a TV star and landing the role of a lifetime.
In this honest, inspiring and relatable memoir, Simu Liu chronicles his family's journey from China to the bright lights of Hollywood with wit and humour.
As a child, Simu's parents left him in the care of his grandparents, bringing him to Canada when he was four. However, Simu soon senses that his new guardians lack the gentle touch of his grandparents, resulting in harsh words and hurt feelings between him and his parents, who find their son emotionally distant and difficult to relate to.
Although they are related by blood, they are separated by culture, language and values.
As Simu grows up, he plays the part of the pious child flawlessly—he gets straight A's, performs exceptionally in national math competitions and makes his parents proud. However, as time passes, he grows increasingly disillusioned with the path that has been laid out for him.
Less than a year out of university, he is fired from his first job and hits rock bottom. He develops a determination centred around creating his own path. This leads him to not only succeeding as an actor but also opens the door to reconciling with his parents.
We Were Dreamers is a story about growing up between cultures, finding your family and becoming the master of your own extraordinary circumstance.

Brutally honest and inspiring
As a first generation immigrant myself, and someone who has a 19-yr-old son, I sincerely congratulate Simu for such a well-written and movingly narrated memoir. I must say I was a bit doubtful about how much I could relate to you when first started listening, as I am somewhere in between your parents and your generations, plus I don’t see myself as ‘typical Asian parent’. However the more I listened the more I am (pleasantly) surprised by how much I related your experiences. Your unique struggles and success are so real and to share that so vividly and truthfully with the public is gold. Hope more migrants and their children (and everyone else really) will listen and be inspired.

Really enjoyed the stories and anecdotes in this. Even though it spans a real sticker short amount of time in comparison to most memoirs it’s clear Simu has gone through a lot to be on the path he is now. It’s also eye opening to hear him discuss his family life as his career develops and the ups and downs along the way. Warm performance that definitely tries to engage with laughter too. Enjoyable

Heartbreaking and heart-mending story
Beautifully written! As first-gen immigrant, this is relatable in many ways. The struggle of his parents to provide a better life for their family and his struggle to follow his dreams, I am torn between two. I'm still following a path set by my parents but slowly taking back control and making the most of my life. The expectations from our parents aren't easy to shake off and the incredibly hard and back-breaking process of following your dreams while struggling with depression is a very challenging experience but I'm glad he's reconciled with his family and has achieved some of his dreams. Amazing story, thank you for sharing it!

Memoir of the year
Every now and then we read a book that we can't put down. This is one of them. As I've shared in subtle asian traits, I thought this book was going to be about his struggles as an actor. It was that, and so much more. It's secretly a book honouring the sacrifices his parents made and how it all became full circle.
It's every asian kid's happy ending - to be able to pursue one's dream and make their parents proud. Thank you Simu, for giving me hope to continue the fight. I'm still on the journey to my happy ending. I wish all asians reading this the strength and tenacity to pursue their dreams.
