Publisher's Summary

Kory was having enough trouble in high school. His girlfriend just dumped him, his poetry made him a target for ridicule, and college applications were looming. The very last thing he needed was to fall in love with another boy.

A must read

This is hands down one of the best books I have ever read. The characters feel very human (ironically) and relatable. Gives a great preapective on LGBT relationships and really pulls on the heart strings. Really didn't want this one to end.

Amazing.

This is one of the best books I have ever read. It felt relatable, and realistic, aside from them being furries. I cried, laughed and felt engaged with every character from start to finish. A wonderfully crafted story, that is sadly missing another book. The performance from the narrator was actually extremely good and engaging. Overall, I can't fault this story and I can't wait to read it again. :)

Great story! Gives me a new perspective on its subject!

I loved the story. Being a straight man, I used to not think much about homosexual people. Now I have great sympathy for them, because I realize that they often have to go through a great deal of pain and grief just to be able to show affection for someone they truly care about. This book actually made me cry, which is a nearly impossible feat for a book.

It also helps that all of the characters are furries! I'm sorry, but anthropomorphic animals will always be cuter to me than humans.

Great story plus great narrator

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I would definitely recommend this audiobook to my friends because I know they will fall in love with the characters and the story like I did when I first read this book back in 2009.

What did you like best about this story?

Waterways has been one of my favorite book from Kyell Gold. Ever since I first read this story, the characters has provided inspirations for me during difficult times of my life. I find myself relating to the things that happen to Kory in the story, some of which parallel what was going on in my life at the time. I've read and re-read both the entire book and sections from the story multiple times and it helped me find the strength to believe I can get through the obstacles I was facing and that things get better. Then there were a couple years during which some very big events of my life took place and in that time I hadn't been able to revisit Waterways and many other books that I greatly enjoyed. However, when I saw the author's blog post about the audiobook release, I did not hesitate in clicking the add to cart and buy button and listening to the story felt like falling in love all over again. I was pleased that I remember all the things that happens in the book, but what came as a surprised for me was that it was a completely different experience than before. The past 3 or 4 years of my life had changed me and my outlook on things tremendously, but when listening to the story, I was reminded of a younger, more naive version of myself by Kory while at the same time I was seeing how much I had changed and grown. By the time I finished listening to the audiobook, I felt a sense that I also came out on the other side of my struggles just as Kory did with his.

What about Robert M. Clark’s performance did you like?

Robert Clark's narration is by far my favorite from the audiobooks I listened to on audible, albeit I've only listened to about 7 different narrators so far. He puts so much life into each of the characters that I love and hate. I would definitely like to check out other books he narrates.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Yes, it was really emotional for me, I cried and laugh and rewind to listen to specific scenes over and over.

Any additional comments?

never has a book given me so much to think about

this book has given me so much to think about. I wish I had read this when I was in high school. just like kory, I too came to the realization I wasnt straight, in high school. but, after reading this, I wish I had come out in high school. also just like kory i grew up in a religious house hold and believe in the teachings of god, but I felt I could never tell anyone anything about how I was feeling. I thought God, although loved me, didnt care about me anymore. maybe I was just confused and was fooling myself. but unlike cory, I kept inside and it really tore me up for years.

sorry about the life story, but what I'm getting at with this review is that, if your a young adult who is going through the same struggles that kory and I went through, trying to come to term of who you are, read this book. because the moral of this book is summed up in the very beginning, "to any gay teen who feel they cant keep their head above water, remember, your an otter, you can swim."

As Intense As It Is Beautiful

When I first saw the unassuming cover for Waterways, I had no idea what I was in for as I dived headfirst into this book. The story is an intense one, towing the line between sad and bittersweet. Many reoccurring themes are woven expertly in throughout the book as we follow the main character through a turbulent, friction-filled time in his life, and by the end of it I felt that the cover didn't do justice to just how deep and alive this book was to me.

As someone who has experienced being a gay teen growing up in a hostile-feeling world of unknowns, so much of this book struck home for me more heavily than I ever would have expected. The aspects of religion, self-discovery, turmoil, doubt, and love so closely matched my own feelings and experiences that I couldn't help but wonder if Kyell Gold had lived some of the words written into the novel, despite the fantastical anthropomorphic world that the book inhabits.

Speaking of the anthropomorphic aspect, if you have trepidation about reading this novel due to being on the fence about whether it might feel distasteful or grating (regardless of if you consider yourself a member of the furry fandom or not), I highly recommend giving this novel a try regardless. By the time the epilogue had concluded I found myself feeling emotional, weighty, and like I had vicariously experienced more of Kory's life than the word count would have suggested (the emotional feeling I was left with more than once as the narrator did a quite good job of acting out the scenes within).

I never like to spoil things, and I suppose by mentioning the fact that the cover belies a very intense, emotional journey I might be doing just that, but it is so intrinsic to the novel's draw and power to keep people like me listening until its conclusion that I felt like it had to be mentioned. This book will likely make you feel sadness, particularly if you are an LGBTQ+ teen or once-teen who grappled with or is grappling with the struggles Kory does within, but I'm very grateful to have stumbled across this book. It is going to leave me thinking about it for many, many days to come, and I don't expect I will ever forget it. I can't recommend it enough.

I love it

I couldn't put it down. It reminded me so much of my younger days when I met my husband, almost 11 years ago now, so many new experiences, good and bad, but this book really stuck with me, and it was just amazing.

An emotional ride.

It's hard to say into words what I really feel, but this was an emotional rollercoaster. At one moment uncertainty, at another its sheer joy, and at one point pain and dread. This was such a good book, that it really touched my soul. The confusion and terror of what will happen to the two beautiful souls, mingle with the blissful happiness of real love. Everyone has been in situations that they wish they could redo, and this story of a confusing time is so pure that it makes me long for that same kindness and love. By far, this is worth every penny, and is one to keep in your heart forever.

Furry Romance at it's finest

Waterways is a masterpiece in deep emotional furry romance, it made me laugh and cry on multiple occasions and I really felt for each and every character, it is so amazingly and realistically written, I want to live in the world of this novel.

Kyell Gold has managed to capture my heart with the tale of Kory and Samaki, the book is highly relatable for me and it has a very special place in my heart.

Not only is the writing so amazingly realistic and well done, the narration is also flawless, making this a novel you will want to listen to time and time again, start to finish, with no breaks.
