Fantastic series!

Well, in my humble opinion one of the best military sci-fi books I’ve come across so far. Got me through 280,000 L metres of indoor rowing. Highly recommended, you will enjoy this.

Science Fiction at it's best!

This science fiction story is pretty far up there as far as I am concerned, and I consider myself an old school scifi. I don't just listen to 1 genre of scifi (and yes, there are multiple sub-genre of sci-fi) I listen to them all, and this book actually encapsulates multiple in the same story. It is a military scifi with elements of hard sci-fi and quasi pseudo-science scifi, but it actually tries to take new concepts in quantum mechanics to justify it's crazy ideas which Ikind of like. That being said, the thing that really makes this series shine is what I mentioned first. It's old school sci-fi. It is not PC or apologetic on the moral questions it brings up, then completely stomps over in order to tell a great story. It doesn't overly glorify higher levels of existence as an achieveable goal for humans and aliens to strive for. It basically takes life on its face value and claims that it's pretty damn brutal and unjust and applies that to almost every alien speciea out there. There are no enlightened vulkans (i.e. space elves) who are the arbiters of moral justice or righteous ethos. Pretty much every species has genocide as their go to method of going to war. This is not a Disney channel story where everything works out in the end and there is an overall place in the univers for everyone. There are actually some pretty brutal actions done by the good guys (humans) and they are non-apoligetic about it. The moral questions the author brings up are brilliant and deep, and he doesn't shy away to bringing 21st century pop cultural references as either nestalgic or as a way to completely demolish our culture in a humorous way. He makes fun of 21st century culture in a way that is believable 160+ years in the future. This really is a great read, and I am super critical on my reviews, often criticizing 5 star reviews harshly for their flaws or lazy writing, but I found very few weak spots in this series. It's almost so good I was willing to refund my credit and buy all 5 books at their retail price, but I'm too cheap for that so the author just has to take the 1 credit and like it. Highly recommend this book!

Love It

As both a Star Trek TNG fan and US immigrant I have to say this series is old-fashioned, militaristic, and jingoistic and I loved it! God bless America!

Excellent SciFi

Excellent series. Not a hint of sjw garbage. Believable characters, lots of aliens, just an overall good listen. I’d put it on par with the likes of Dune or the Posleen War series.

a story about the "F" word

if you took out all "F" words and the other curse words, the actual book could be half or less the length it is. Not sure why there is so much cursing except for meeting a word count for the editor. Not sure the editor is not the real source of the fiiller cursing. if you love useless filler that takes away from the story, then you have found it

Way worth the credit!

A bit of a different twist on your normal space operas but I enjoyed it.

Just OK

This is a group of 5 books. The 1st two books were really good. The 3rd was fine and after that I just didn't care any more. I skipped to the end for the epilogue just to get it over with.

Fantastic Story Arc, Character Gen, and Narration

I'm not sure how C.J. Carella nailed the personalities of military personnel so well. Over and over again the characters bring me back to my time in the USMC and interactions with many of my veteran friends. Comes off as very real character wise. Super indulgent for those of us who would like some order in the direction of humanity. Not going to work with a lot of the readers as they would want some unicorn aliens that are peaceful or something.... This isn't that kind of book. The nice aliens all got killed by the warlike aliens or were isolated long enough to avoid dealing with the warlike aliens. Either way, humans aren't powerful enough to not have to fight.. Story has a great pace and the development of characters is fantastic. Came off as a viable bridge between present day USA to Warhammer 30K. I'm on my third listen through. This book needs promotion to the Veterans of USA considering the success of books like Starship Troopers.

Not worth the cost

The potential is great, but the author drops the ball too many times. The narrator also is not very good. The ending was anticlimactic and the author never answers 90% of the concepts he brought up. Also it seems like he didn't have it proof read.

written for Americans

An offensive beginning to any nationality other than American typifying the global perception of that country's self image. The story improved a bit, but the big ending was laughably bad.
