Her children have a deadly secret. Can she uncover it before the police do?

Melissa Byatt’s life in Forest Grove seems as perfect as can be: a doting husband, three loving children and a beautiful house in a close-knit community. But appearances can be deceiving.

One evening, Melissa arrives home to the unimaginable: her husband lies stabbed on the kitchen floor, their children standing calmly around him.... With horror, she realises that one of them is to blame. But which one? And why would they attack their own father?

Her loyalties torn, in a split second she decides to protect her children at all costs - even if that means lying to the police. But when someone in the neighbourhood claims to know more than they should, Melissa discovers that some secrets are beyond her control....

Can she find out the truth of what happened before the rumours spread? And can the family unite to escape the spotlight of scandal - or are none of them as innocent as Melissa insists?

Don’t waste your time

Semi spoiler....
I can’t even deal with the narrator when she’s reading all the community face book posts. Honestly, I didn’t even finish the book- I shouldn’t really be writing a review but I felt compelled to. There’s too much random detail about things that don’t matter and all of the Facebook posts are so irritating to read. Maybe they’ll come into play at the end of the book, I don’t know. But dear god, if it weren’t for me getting this boom from amazons monthly prereleases then I would’ve wanted my credit back.

I’m sorry but no.

This was one of the most painful books I’ve endured. I nearly threw the towel in several times and I wish I had. It was painful. The plot itself was decent but it was so mired in the Facebook chit chat group, irritating social gossip and the most naive, pathetic, spineless main character. Melissa, the mother was just mind boggling.

Great Book

I really liked this book because it didn’t waste any time, it jumped right into the mystery and twists. The narration was excellent. It is a well done story!

Horrible

If I wanted to read Facebook posts-I would. The narrator screeches arguments with children and FB posts for 56 chapters. You can listen to the first chapter and then the last 3 and be done with this book.

Family lies and secrets

There’s nothing like a book with so many twists and turns to get to the truth. Every time I think I have everything all figured out, something else is unveiled. That’s the type of books I like.

thriller with twists till the end

loved the accent, characters and the town! Because I live in a small town in a rural area, I enjoyed the political side and the nosey neighbors too! twist and turns through the story were great. would recommend

The ramifications of ‘tolerating’

First, the main female character weakly tolerates a marriage that is rotten at its core. The very bad and intrusive behavior of the husband’s parents is tolerated. Bad behavior ripples all through the community, but is just sloughed off. No one has the fortitude to say, “No. Enough.”

That is, as in this case the children are forced into that role. As always, the children bear the brunt of this ‘tolerance.’ A strong but unequivocal “No. That is enough” statement is a real novelty in today’s world. Author makes some good points.

I did find the narration accent to be frequently distracting.

Wow

The very first chapter was so exciting I was rapt. It all got a bit complicated as it went on but my feelings for the mother were heartbraking. I would definitely recommend this story. The narrator was excellent.

Dragged out

Bit boring and dragged out, could have been hours shorter. I liked another of her books from this ‘village’ though.

Good storytelling

Good story that kept my interest. Loved the narrator who wasnt afraid to really perform the dialogue. The plot was interesting although I wasn't totally surprised by some of the twists. The social media comments were very entertaining. Would recommend.

Stubborn refusal to explain for very good reason..

This is a long listen with quite a bit of repetition and domestic detail. However it all unfurls very cleverly so the back stories are important.

The narration is fine, male voices spoken effectively by a female narrator, although one adult who should speak, only has a few words. The children are also well done. The local voices on the chit chat group were indicative of their characters, some of whom are nasty vindictive and judgemental. Others kinder and more reasonable. Each different and recognisable.

I thought it all ingenious and twisty with much made of the nearby forest and its secrets which I enjoyed.
