About this listen

“As if waking up from a nightmare, I thought, If I am going to be traumatized, I might as well be traumatized in Paris, right?

Devastated by the unexpected end of her decades-long marriage, renowned spiritual teacher and intuitive guide Sonia Choquette undertook an equally unexpected move and relocated to Paris, the scene of many happy memories from her life as a student and young mother. Arriving in the aftermath of the Charlie Hebdo massacre, she found a Paris as traumatized by this unforeseen event as she had been by her divorce. Together, over the following years, she and the city she loves began a journey of healing that involved deep soul searching and acceptance of new, sometimes uncomfortable reality.

In this follow-up to Walking Home, Sonia shares her intimate thoughts and fears as well as the unique challenges of setting up a new life in a foreign land. From moving into a freezing, malodorous apartment to a more pleasant - yet haunted - flat across the Seine to her current light-filled home, Sonia shares how these changes parallel her inner transformation. Along the way, Sonia regales listeners with vivid stories of her unfortunate encounters with French hairdressers and beauticians, her adventures in French fashion, and her search for the perfect neighborhood café. Her companion throughout is the city of Paris - a character unto itself - which never ceases to fill her with wonder, surprise, and delight and provides her with the spiritual strength to succeed in establishing her new life.

This is a light and personable read, a peak into Paris that reads like a diary of moving there. Funny heartwarming and over dramatic at times. It’s a pleasant read

Lovely book

My favourite aspect of the book is the clear message that no matter if you are a medium, spiritual teacher or anyone else “expert”, you are allowed to break down over a bad haircut or awful brow job. Not to dismiss the gravity of a divorce, I felt permission to seek healing in beautiful places and spaces, red lipstick and good coffee as much as in prayer, meditation and “self-development”.
The reason I gave the story 4 stars despite having an absolute ball listening to this book, is because I am not sure it would stand strongly as a five-starrer without the context of who Sonia is, her work and previous books, including Walking Home. If this was the first time I heard of the author, I suspect the book would not have had the same impact on me.
In conclusion, if you are a fan of Sonia Choquette, her teaching, her books on intuition etc… then I highly recommend to read this one too. Better yet, listen to it - Sonia’s voice makes it all the more special!

The honesty and openness with which Sonia shared this experience with her audience.

Firstly, Sonia has opened my eyes to how the Parisians treat overseas visitors so based on this, I will never consider living there so, thank you.

In regard to the story; While I understand how traumatic a divorce can be and why Paris looked appealing to a broken heart and lost soul, I found the whole storyline to be one big whinge of the decisions that were made.

Was it really necessary to have every response of a simple discussion written into the story? (She said, then I said, then she said...) The book could've been 30% shorter without losing any character personality.

A question that I was asking myself after the first 3 months of living in Paris was, isn't Sonia intuitive with 2 decades of experience so why did she not use her 'gut' feelings on any of those decisions?

I believe if this was Sonia's first book, it would not have been a success and it certainly would not have rated as high as the reviews displayed. It was simply riding on the coat tails of her previous works and her 'statut de celebrite'.

A little disappointing to say the least.

Drawn Out

I found this book exceptionally tedious and shallow in its content. The author delivers an account of her post marriage move from America to Paris to live. However the flavour is one of adolescent self absorption. Although set in Paris it reeks of American sensibility. I forced myself to finish it but wouldn't recommend it to any one.

Harsh Critique !
