About this listen

From the author of The Frozen Lake comes an enthralling novel of love, betrayal, and idealism as three very different young women go up to Oxford in the years immediately before World War Two.

Vee - the clergyman’s daughter. Boyish, alluring, she plans to use her time at Oxford to put right everything that went wrong in her loveless childhood. Her friendship with Alfred introduces her to politics and the subversive attractions of secret societies; it will lead to her career as a secret agent, but at what cost to old loyalties and her true feelings?

Claudia, radiant, intense, aristocratic, is equally drawn to the secret society and one member in particular; his dazzling influence will see her travel to Berlin and come under the spell of fascism as war looms.

And Lally, glamorous daughter of an Irish-American senator, is sceptical of the society and the arguments from both sides.

I absolutely love Elizabeth Edmondson's books in this related series & the talented narration by Nicolette McKenzie, of these wonderful characters- a team made in literary heaven.

So interesting & an excellent portrayal of the 1930's. This series is also a wonderful study & commentary on women's roles & lives during this time, sometimes difficult to read / hear in 2022. I hope you enjoy, Tonii - Australia 🇦🇺

A Beautiful Writer

It drags with too much detail at times but it was a good read and highlights how so much of the betrayals of that time occurred quite innocently

Absorbing and believable

I enjoyed this tale set in the 1930s, a story of deception, lies, liaisons. The subject matter was unusual and I felt the characters were realistic.

Thoroughly enjoyed this book

loved it.

A good read, I enjoyed it, but it could do with a little bit of an edit.
An interesting structure: a gloomy auspicious prologue, followed by a lightharted first half of the book, to be finished of by a much serious second half. Well developed characters. I enjoyed it, not enough to go back to it (hence, only 4 stars), but enough to look up over books by the same author.

Good mix of two genres

Enjoyed the book. Got a bit lost at times with the time jumps back and to the present. The narrator was really good and did a fantastic job, however can’t help but feel that a younger narrator would have been more appropriate because of the age of the characters.
Otherwise a very good listen.

Enjoyed the book.
