 Geschrieben hat Sharp "Von der Diktatur zur Demokratie" 1993 nach einer Reise nach Myanmar, dem ehemaligen Birma. Dort lehrte er heimlich gewaltlosen Widerstand. 198 Methoden dazu hat er gesammelt: Vom Wahlboykott, Hungerstreik und Sitzstreik bis zur Verweigerung der Zusammenarbeit mit der Regierung. Es gebe viele Wege, "Nein" in einem Polizeistaat oder zu einem Regime zu sagen, so Sharp. "Finde heraus, wo Dein Regime stark ist und wo es schwach ist", erzählt er in einem Trailer zu einem Dokumentarfilm, der in diesem Jahr über ihn erscheinen soll und fügt hinzu: "Jede Diktatur hat ihre Schwächen."

Dieses Hörbuch ist ein Lehrbuch zum gewaltfreien Sturz von Diktaturen. Besonders bei der Befreiung von den Diktaturen in Osteuropa hat es im letzten Jahrzehnt eine wichtige Rolle gespielt. Die serbische Widerstandsbewegung "Otpor" hat es beim Sturz von Milosevic im Jahre 2000 benutzt, es wurde von den Befreiungsbewegungen "Kmara" in Georgien, "Pora!" in der Ukraine, "KelKel" in Kirgisistan und "Subr" in Belarus (Weißrußland) verwendet. Der Klassiker der Widerstandsliteratur, wurde bisher in über 30 Sprachen übersetzt.
