Publisher's Summary

Clare remembers the cold. She remembers abandoned cars and children’s toys littered across the road. She remembers dark shapes in the snow and a terror she can’t explain. And then...nothing.

When she wakes, aching and afraid in a stranger’s Gothic home, he tells her she was in an accident. He claims he saved her. Clare wants to leave, but a vicious snowstorm has blanketed the world in white, trapping them together, and there’s nothing she can do but wait.

At least the stranger seems kind...but Clare doesn’t know if she can trust him. He promised they were alone here, but she sees and hears things that convince her something else is creeping about the surrounding woods, watching. Waiting. Between the claustrophobic storm and the inescapable sense of being hunted, Clare is on edge...and increasingly certain of one thing:

Her car crash wasn't an accident. Something is waiting for her to step outside the fragile safety of the house...something monstrous, something unfeeling.

Something desperately hungry.

Darcy Coates is the best Haunted Writer I've found

Darcey Coates is the most well written author in this genre, I cannot fault her impeccable writing style, imagination, creep factor and story telling. These are immensely entertaining and surprising plots. The orator Angela Dawe is one of the very best Audible readers I've come across and she brings this book to life. Do look for her other Audible reading of Darcey's books..they're a perfect match. I highly recommend them both!

Predictable dialogue

After awhile I just started groaning in response to the dialogue. Half the book is him telling her to stay safe and her arguing, agreeing, and then not. It seriously got old. The other half was them arguing about not being hurt when they’re actually hurt. And in the background there are zombies. That’s the book.

The narration was really good.

A Romance Novel Disguised as a Horror Novel

The best way to describe this book is as a romance novel disguised as a horror novel. I decided to give this book a chance as it dominates (as well as Coates other novels) the horror section of Barnes and Noble and because of the relatively high reviews. Overall I was not very impressed and was very relived to be done with it.

The characters (which really there are only two of) are lifeless and dull. Clare the protagonist is bland, but is tolerable except for when she is being hysterical and talking about how much she loves Dorran. However Dorran (the love interest) was really cringey and very difficult to take seriously. He is the epitome of the handsome mysterious guy trope . He immediately falls in love with Clare upon arrival of Winterborne and is constantly talking about how important she is to him and he will do anything for her. The problem is I don't believe their love story as it just doesn't seem to develop from anything.

My next complaint is an issue I have seen not just in this book, but something reoccurring I have noticed for awhile with many books/movies/tv shows. I'm so tired of every book having a place with "Winter" in the title ever wince Winterfell from A Song of Ice and Fire/ Game of Thrones. At this point it is so overdone and everyone knows where you got the name idea from. Also, did the love interest really need to be named Dorran? It just seemed like yet another check mark next to the "mysterious guy" trope in having a weird name. All I know is that every time I heard either "Dorran" or "Winterborne" I cringed internally. I admit this maybe a personal issue, but I wanted to include it just in case anyone else noticed these trends and felt the same way.

On a positive note I did appreciate Clare not being a Mary Sue super powered wonder woman. She was quite scared in situations that most of us would be scared in and I appreciated that realistic characteristic. If you want a romance novel with a slight horror twist this may be the book for you,. However, that is not what I thought I was getting when I picked this up.

Ugh

It was a decent attempt, but the book was disjointed and the completely ridiculous romance made it all seem silly. Save your money.

narrator whispers

I usually listen at bedtime to fall asleep. Narrator actually whispers and then nearly shouts in same breath. I turn it up to try to hear her whispers, the boom! She starts talking normally nearly popping my eardrums. just cannot hear the poor narrator.

Super good!

A different take on the apocalyptic theme and it is fabulous! The narration was excellent and all the twists and turns that come together is shocking yet smooth. I got a little concerned about a possible romance (which I abhor), but the author saved me from that too. And the kicker... it's CREEPY! Almost had to put my phone in the freezer! (90s kids will understand that reference). I can't wait to listen to book #2!

I'm starting the next book now

I didn't realize until the very end that this was a series. I'm going to get the next part now because I have to know what happens!
It took a bit for me to get completely invested in this book but I'm glad I stuck it out. I thought I knew where it was going early on, but I was way off.

Got Better Towards The End

This book started out good, seriously deteriorated then picked back up in the end. I missed the part in the reviews that said this is also a love story. The majority of the middle of the book focused on "I'm tying to keep you safe", "why can't I go with you", "you absolutely must eat something", "you are simply too tired", "I am not hurt", that type of thing over and over and over. I finally blocked out most of it, then when something finally happened I almost missed it because I was barely listening. The story line itself isn't bad, and I've read that the second book is better, so I may give it a try. We'll see.

Please release 3 and 4 in this series!

I love this series, an odd combination, romantic post apocalyptic fiction. I’m not one for romance stories but the two main characters are very endearing.

This was a very well thought out storyline! It hooks its teeth into you and won’t let go! Sleep well, if you can! Big kudos to the author!

Voices in the snow

Hmm not really sure about this one, it’s a good take on the apocalypse genre buts really slow to get going and a little bit Mills & Boon for me!
It was interesting enough to make me listen to the end but not sure if I’ll try the next in the series.

So glad I stumbled on this by chance....

Such great character development from the off, you're in there with them from page one. I'm not a reviewer who likes to give storylines away but what I will say is it's fast paced, well thought out intelligent writing that keeps you on the brink holding your breath many times.
The narration in this book is stellar. The narrator does a wonderful job of both male and female voices. adding the ring inflection. The accents are spot on and she's not overly dramatic to sell the story. Top notch.
Great listen all round really. can't fault it. XxX

Couldn't stop listening.

This book was written well and narrated superbly. The way the scene was set and the story unfolded was done with style and grace. I felt that Clare behaved as anyone would in this situation, and what I thought was going to be an end of world weather disaster was so much more, with precise detail that left me wanting more. I will definitely be listening to the rest of this series of books.

some might say implausible bur, is it?

I would say that the idea of the whole world’s pipulation or most of it anyway, would seem implausible. Yet it is the subject of a lot of novels where you get zombies and mindless changelings and they are popular. This book is just that. A domineering mother turned in to something weird, a car wreck and the story between them one the rescued and the other the rescuer. It has the usual elements of a Carcey Coates nobel including hope at the end though how that comes about is unknown. It’s not a bad read mind, I enjoyed it though this kind of book is an acquired taste.

stick with it

I enjoyed this book but I felt it took too long to get really going. Not one of my favourite books by Darcy but glad i stuck with it and got to the end.
