About this listen

New worlds get new kings, and that's exactly what Abby thinks she's found in her boss's hacked code.

With a cataclysmic asteroid careening toward Earth, the VRMMORPG project Viridian Gate Online has become more than just a game, and Abby thinks her boss, Robert Osmark, wants to be more than just its founding father.

Now, Abby holds a hacked key to the kingdom that could earn her a punishment worse than death. To uncover the secret that drug lords and corrupt politicians paid millions for, Abby must dive into the game she helped create and team up with one of its AI creations. It's a race against the clock as she tries to discover what's hidden in the secret code before Osmark can crown himself ruler over all that remains of humanity.

From James A. Hunter—author of Viridian Gate Online, Rogue Dungeon, War God's Mantle, and the Yancy Lazarus series—and debut author J. D. Astra, comes an epic new entry into the expanded universe of Viridian Gate Online that you won't want to miss!

The way Emily narrated the book was amazing and immersive. Her alarm sounds got chuckle out of me every time I heard it! Keep up the good work. A great storyline with an even greater narrator!

Amazing story and amazing narrator

I really enjoyed the story line of this book. I found the concepts interesting, but I struggled with the writing, specifically, the character development and the timeline. I found the main character to be whiney and over dramatic to the extreme. I understand that she isn't supposed to be super confident and sure of herself, but the doubting of every single decision was off-putting. The timeline advancement was a bit bizarre too. The entire book takes place over roughly 3 days (which is fine), but the development is written in a way in which the context and relationship development appear to be months in the building not days or hours in some cases. I found the narrator to be good for most of the book, but I struggled with the portrayal of yells, shouts and screams within the book. I also found the whiney voice for the constant self doubt moments grating. I will give the second book a crack as I did really enjoy the story concept and am keen to see where it goes, and I can only hope the writing improves.

Great story, but the writing needs work.
